Intel GPUs of the pre-GMA era barely followed standards like VESA and VGA. Not a surprise they don't work.

When I boot into VGA Safe Mode, I am presented with this:http://i.imgur.com/gVTxZ.jpg
The laptop has an intel 855GM graphics chip. VESA works fine. The laptop is running Icaros 1.4.1.
