Thanks for your clarifications, now I understand better.

Also: the reason why I'm here is because I want to help in one way or another, so I'm not running away anytime soon
For the moment I'm just getting to know all the resources and people involved to see where I can help.

Yes indeed. It perhaps sounds a bit illogical but paolone does mention it on the icaros site.

I was not aware that you didn't notice it, otherwise i would have advised differently .

Just in case you want to know about that: paolone's troubles here lay in the fact that his time and bandwidth are both limited. Releasing point-releases and then update them using patches is a solution for that. Keeping icaros-distro up-to-date is a very time-consuming business.

If i recall correctly there was talk once about another update system that checks your icaros/aros version and compile the needed patches for your machine on-the-fly and then deliver them to your system. Dunno if that is still planned for the future.

Yes you are correct here. Things lack and probably will continue to . As stated above paolone does a tremendous job on it's own (ofcourse with help from developers) and that leaves some things to be desired.

Thank you for your compiled list of patches and versions..
It is definitly something i was thinking about doing also but could not be bothered with atm. I am sure it will help others in the future also. Perhaps this is something to put up on the wiki ?

Yes confusing as it may sound you have to update it manually. And i really hope (and think) it will improve in the future

no problem at all

This issue of yours just made me realize my help was not much of use and i apologize for that. Also i hope that this troublesome start with aros does not put you off in any way. It really is a nice OS, please enjoy

Ok, I've sorted out the matter.
When you download Icaros from www.icarosdesktop.com you are always downloading the unpatched version

I've applied all the patches (1,3,4) and now I have the menu I'm supposed to have.

This also made me realize of these bugs:
- The declared version of Wanderer/AROS is not reliable
- The declared version of Wanderer/AROS from LUPD is not reliable
- The LiveUpdater utility, unless it is supposed to advice release versions and not patches, does not work because it always says I have the latest version (1.003003)

The only reliable method to know AROS version is checking against this table I've compiled while applying the patches

Icaros 1.3.3 PLAIN
==================
AROS version 1.12
Exact AROS version 41
Wanderer version: 0.91
Exact Wanderer version: 44.2 (11.11.2011)
Internal and External classes marked with "vXX.XX"
Sys:System/About: v1.3.3, Dec 12 2011 svn build 42885

Icaros 1.3.3 PATCH 01
==================
AROS version 1.12
Exact AROS version 41
Wanderer version: 0.95
Exact Wanderer version: 44.2 (22.12.2011)
Internal and External classes marked with "vXX.XX"
Sys:System/About: v1.3.3, Dec 23 2011 svn build 43199

Icaros 1.3.3 PATCH 03
==================
AROS version 1.12
Exact AROS version 41
Wanderer version: 1.1
Exact Wanderer version: 44.3 (11.01.2012)
Internal and External classes marked with nothing
Sys:System/About: v1.3.3, Jan 14 2012 svn build 43518

Icaros 1.3.3 PATCH 04
==================
AROS version 1.12
Exact AROS version 41
Wanderer version: 1.2
Exact Wanderer version: 44.4 (20.01.2012)
Internal and External classes marked with nothing
Sys:System/About: v1.3.3, Jan 14 2012 svn build 43518

I will add to my personal suggestion-box for AROS of useful tip: the Live distribution should be updated with the latest patches

Thanks for your help!

Hi jman,

I have a completely different set of options for Wanderer (see attachment).

well..euh.. *scarlettredsomething*

Then you have my sincere apologies and i will take back my remark, as i (wrongfully) assumed you had succesfully installed icaros desktop 1.3.3 + patch 01 + patch 03 + patch 04.

Appearantly something went wrong along the way. Did you happen to notice some error-reporting during installation if the patches ?

The screengrab you showed is an ancient one (well, relatively speaking :) and is not what it is suppose to look. In that matter you are perfectly right

Quote:
This is why I was asking about the AROS version: I'm running Icaros 1.3.3 patched to 04 and I think this setting is somewhere else or removed.

About the versioning numbering: That is something i wonder about also, as it seems at first sight that it is impossible to see which patch(es) was/were installed.

I run the the same 1.3.3. version.. (at least i thought so) and again appearantly it is not so

The only hint i can give you in that matter is that the patches that you downloaded are actually archive files. All the files that updates icaros are in there -> ergo you can try to see manually (by filedate/filesize/checksum) if the patched file is actually present on your icaros system.
If not present then you can assume something went wrong for that patch-archive.

If indeed something went wrong with installing the patches then i guess that would be very usefull information for paolone as of why things went wrong -> so he can take it into consideration for the next release of icaros.

Is there perhaps something in your configuration that you believe to be out of the ordinary ?

Again i apologize, also because i'm not much of a help with this post.

regards,

p.s. i just realized something.. wanderer/about shows versioning for wanderer -> as that is the thing that was updated to get such an option in the first place you could check that first. It also shows the date of wanderer compilation.

Don't worry, I clearly saw this coming And I'm happy to see that what I was thinking actually is true: I have a completely different set of options for Wanderer (see attachment).

This is why I was asking about the AROS version: I'm running Icaros 1.3.3 patched to 04 and I think this setting is somewhere else or removed.

@Kalamatee:

You're probably right But that sounds a lot like politics to me (and i normally like to stay away from that)

I personally would not even make it optional (for the user) at all. In these day and age it is commonly accepted to have transparent icon dragging in a modern OS. I take it the only reason for the excistance for this option is the fact aros supports legacy amiga's ? (which is a good thing btw).

regards,

p.s. On second thought: if i state that it is common to have, perhaps making the option default to be set is a more practical solution ?, moreso as it seems to confuse some users.

IMHO thats probably the wrong place for the option .. it should really be on the general tab..

OK, I give up: I cannot find anything related to background transparency anywhere in sys:prefs/Wanderer

What should the automatic updater (LUPD) declare to be the version of AROS 1.3.3 with patch 04? I see 1.003003 ... is that correct?

Thank you.
