Just a remark for this thread. It's good to be prepared for ABI V1, just want to give some reality check on the time-line. Although we hopefully can start on the work on ABI V1 in main trunk next week to the week after there is still a long way to go before it can be released. I think we will be very lucky if ABI V1 can be released still this year. I think Q1 2012 is more realistic. Especially the work on DOS Packets is incomplete together with good documentation that has been discussed and agreed upon on the dev mail list. An ABI can only be fixed if the latter is done. greets, Staf.

I hope we can get Jahc to recompile WookieChat or I be sad ;)
He kind of quit supporting AROS and MorphOS, but lets see.

Well i am sure Fryingpan could be recompiled. Not updated is not equal to not maintained ; )
I have no fear for a hard cut.

I worry that once V1 goes live there will be quite a few packages we've got used to using but which are not maintianed anymore failing. For example, am I wrong in saying FryingPan is no longer being maintained? Not being able to burn CDs would be a pain. Is our version of Ghostscript in the same boat, or or the sources to that in the build tree? Just some concerns,
Nigel.

Yes - IMHO it makes no sense to keep the obsolete files available.
It would be better to archive them somewhere perhaps and start afresh (tm). Perhaps then we could start making sure that submitted packages have been done correctly (check the binaires do work with the abi1 code, and that the package is named correctly etc .. still seem to be a lot of people submitting stuff and not even reading the requirements that are printed on the page..)

There are some internal changes which cause that V1 applications are no longer binary compatible with V0 ones.

ABI stands for Application Binary Interface. It is not a new operating system since all of the old programs can be recompiled for it with no changes to the source.

The new ABI referrs to how the libraries and programs all talk to each other. These "calling conventions" determine what piece of information sits in which of the processor's registers when doing communications between libraries and other libraries and libraries and applications.

I know my explanation isn't all that simple but I hope you can understand it.

Can someone explain what the ABI V1 is in simple terms? As far as I understand, all programs will stop functioning, is it a new OS? Thanks
