cured (mostly) by installing netpbm
which includes *pngtoppm* package that
I dont remember listed as a dependency
but it seems to be so

As you are running hosted, you can modify the startup-sequence (under linux), to comment the wanderer opening and the shell closing.
(it could be a bug in sys:system/wanderer/wanderer)
Then, run ./aros and "loadwb" at prompt.

For me, the latest D/L doesn't work for some X11 ? (probably) reason.
