Re: VmwAROS - a VMware pre-configured AROS environment

Good points, Keen, anyway:

- The network is already configured. This is one of the most important things of VmwAROS, as I wanted a system that could interact with the foreign world. You can read my progresses on www.vmwaros.org.

- In prefs you will find the theme manager. That's good to restore the original AOS theme, but you can always modify startup-sequence to turn off decoration system at all.

- In the first days of VmwAROS, Amistart was up and running. Unluckily, due to the fragile FFS filesystem, it hanged AROS and unvalidated the disc too much often, so I cautionally removed it during development. I surely restore it when I'm finished. In the meanwhile, I've asked Darius for a updated version, and I hope I will provide it in VmwAROS as well :)

- VMware hidd is not working anymore, so I can only hope someone will pick up its development and update it. I was thinking about contributing to the SB16 bounty as well, in order to have sound working within the virtual machine.

- I have also took in consideration a way to update easily the system, at least the kernel and the core components, releasing "patches" on a regular (and reasonable) timeline, but for now I'm too much into "creating" VmwAROS, for thinking about updates. And don't forget I have a work too... :(

Well, as for me, i`d like to see the net preconfigured in VM.
Also, it will be nice to have an option to easily disable decorations, to save CPU usage on slow hosts.
Will there be Amistart ? I hope Darius will like the idea...
I`d not add to it to autostart anyway.

Also, it will be good if someone look at VmWare hidd if it`s still working.

And if you not change the base of the system too much i guess, it can be made updatable.

You're all encouraged to suggest what you would expect from VmwAROS. So, if you have any application and/or feature you'd like to find, and that are already available on AROS, plese tell me. I can't promise to be enough able to put them all, but I'll do what i can in order to.

BTW your blog bout the read locking: I had it too, if I wrote files to a subdirectory while the system crashes. If the file is written on top level drive (e.g. SYS:) while crashing there was no prob.! I posted this bug some months before in aros-dev...

Thanks for the hint. This will be very useful, at least until someone will understand why AROS behaves like this, and fixes the problem.

Stay tuned :)

Thank you for the info. I'll try your VM as soon as it is available.

Hi, VmwAROS already uses the host connection to the Internet. So you can IRC with AiRcOs and so from the guest operating system. You have only to manually setup the IP address of the virtual machine, but I have provided a ConfigIP script in Preferences that makes it easy.

VmwAROS has its website athttp://www.vmwaros.org
It's still unavailable, 'cos I have just registered the domain. But you can access the site from its "back door"
http://vmwaros.blogspot.com

For Compiling a "hello world" Program, just install Murks IDE (from aros archives).
It contains the native gcc and some simple example projects.

Well, maybe it's time to spend some words on a new project I'm working on...

Resized Image

VmwAROS is basically a pre-configured virtual machine for VMware, which in my intentions will work with VMware Workstation 5/6, VMware Server and hopefully VMware Player, with easy file transfer from/to the host Windows/Linux operating system thanks to YAFS.

Please notice the PUB: directory and the session of Filezilla connected to that. Also, in order to make network configuration easier, please notice the ConfigIP script in Prefs, which at this stage will simply open all the net configuration files for editing.

I'd really like to make this a full-featured environment, however I will need some hints about making up a working development chain tools that might compile a "hello world!" directly. Anyone interested in helping me may send some instructions to paolone(at)aros.org.
