Fit into ROM space... interesting. Is this so it will work with softskick ROM relocation software, FPGA systems with or is someone actually planning to make an (EP)ROM drop-in repacement for classics?

Kalamatee - many thanks for the link to the blog; some really great things to look forward to in there and I'm very much looking forward to being able to purchase a copy of FinalWriter.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Sounds like a plan ;)

I didn?t realize that the whole thing should fit on ROM. Also I looked at it at a more general point (GUI for AROS, Wanderer-development) and not so 68k-related. In this case - and if you can?t strip down Wanderer - it makes sense and I am fine with it.

I am fine with it anyway (as deadwood said: "I'm far from telling anyone what he should or should not do in his free time."

Ok you won.... Fitting into rom is much different from fitting on a floppy ; )

Glad to see the topic rasing interest :)

A few general notes after reading comments:

1) This bounty is targeted towards solving a problem that AROS 68k has. It is not expected it will benefit other architectures much.

2) The functionality needs to be ROM based to serve the purpose. There are about 150kB available in ROM for that. Wanderer, even slimmed one, will "never" fit into this space.

3) Answering Ball000 - only ROM based functionality can be used to implement these addons. I don't recall if gadtools is part of ROM (I think it is)

4) I'm far from telling anyone what he should or should not do in his free time.

5) Answering Pascal - background image goes outside of definition of minimalistic

6) I'm unsure about List view support as minimalistic. Comments?

I updated the bounty description to include the rename functionality and explicit note about beeing ROM based. I plan to submit the bounty in next week - if you still spot some mising minimalistic functionality, let me know.

What are those color tables ?

Prefs/presets/colortables/ICC

do i need all of them? they are 1.7MB in size...

I am on good track an should make fit a minimal aros on 2x 1.44MB floppies.
Colortables with 1.7MB are in my way : )

EDIT:
All LIBS required to run Wanderer are 1.2MB in size

Not sure what "Support standard .info files" means? Aren't those already supported by icon.library?

Those are my words so I better explain. If you open the 68k AROS Live CD in Workbook, you don't get any icons until you do Show All. Then the .info files are treated as regular files (see the attached screenshot). EDIT: I should've guessed attachments wouldn't work here! In the screenshot, you would see a directory icon for "System" and next to it a default hammer+cat's eye icon for a file called "System.info".

If those are actually PNG icons then the issue is a bit different - the .info file should still be recognised as an icon even if the format itself isn't known (similar to how Workbench displays NewIcons as empty boxes).

Thank you for explanation. Though it seems to be a bug somewhere in the 68k flavor, as the i386-Windows-hosted version of Workbook does show icons properly as can be seen here (there are original icons and Aros-png ones mixed).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/zts0qovw94m66yw/Workbook%20on%20Windows%20hosted.JPG?dl=0

EDIT: well... not exactly "properly" as there seems to be an unexpected horizontal black line between most of the original icons and their label. That's also the case when Wanderer shows those, so it's probably not Workbook's fault. Perhaps it has to do with the lack of system-drawn 3D frame around them on Aros?

Everyone knew it was impossible. Along came a fool who did not know and he did it.

- rename files and directories (to be added to the bounty)

Good point, missed that one. Thanks.

@kalamatee

wanderer being aros desktop solution for aros is all fine, but as it is buggy, especially on 68k, just to mention various prefs are not working due to endian issues and the wait for wanderer2 extends with no deadline, we need at least some working interim solution.

@thread
my personal preference and least work would be scalos at this point, as it is feature complete and only needs to be debugged. speed wise it probably may even compete with workbook, im not sure, but i had such impression. it also seems to work correctly on x86, im not aware of problems, but im not testing x86 so much.

im not very satisfied with magellan, as a matter of personal opinion, because of different paradigms, also the latest version is slower than the original one on aros68k. it doesnt seem a good choice for 68k desktop, at this time.

but im supporting the cause to improve workbook a bit, in order to have it completed. im also supporting the idea to improve the installer, even though i understand that it isnt a priority.

concerning a bounty, what amount is necessary for it to be picked up? what about debugging scalos for 68k, do we need a bounty for this too? if so how much?
