USB is back online, but this throws up another issue... It was the poseidon.prefs file that was choking it. In the thought that this was corrupted in some way, I copied across the one from my archive (which I know was working), but there was exactly the same problem. Has the poseidon side of the build recently changed in any way that might cause this? Bit of a pain as I had a few things set up (keyboard, which is an A4000 one via a lyra interface, and my analogue usb joystick). I'll have to see if there is any way to pull back in the old prefs...

I had also problems with latest 68k nightly like prefs do not open. Version from 6.5.2015 works. It does not even boot (just tested). Something must be broken.

I forget the date of the older nightly, but it was pre the changes made to bring the ABI1 features to ABI0. The kernel module fat-handler bug is the one that klls the boot if the fat hernel module is loaded and you have any fat partitons; my desktop seems to particularly prone to this one (it was the one I was talking about on the Icaros development list when Icaros 2 was being developed, back around WIP8 or so).

OK, now I'm wondering if in my rush to get this working I hit the wrong link and pulled down ABI1 instead of 0; I needed to print something urgently on my awkward new Canon printer, and I needed to get the file onto the desktop from the netbook (as it's my only machine set up to print to the Canon via email). So combination of an unexpected failure and having to have the printout within half-an-hour rather threw me - sorry! OK, so it's ABI1 that I can't boot from; still might be work a look at for those wishing to test ABI1 on x86 (given the bounty for an ABI1 distro this could be quite relevent at some point).

P.S. I managed to get the file printed by converting the PDF to a jpeg via Ghostscript and printing that via sd card inserted into the printer. So, noted to self:

(1) Get netbook set up for e-mail printing too.
(2) Double check it's the right nightly being downloaded...

I just tried the AROS-20150516-pc-i386-boot-iso.zip that I downloaded fromhttp://aros.sourceforge.net/nightly.php. It has all the modules listed instead of just .gz package so it is possible to remove the fat.handler from the kernel modules list.

A few things aren't clear to me: what's the date of your old CD? What ABI is the new CD (the presence of a small number of boot packages rather than individual modules suggests ABIv1)? What's "the kernal module fat-handler bug"?

You must have a buggy VIA chipset on that machine. Previously Aros allowed the chipset to write past allocated buffers if there was some babbling USB device inserted. There is no space past the buffer and the buffer is on stack -> crash

If VIA chipset encounters a device that babbles then the chipset goes offline, it's a hardware bug for VIA.

Or it might be something else all together. It sounds odd that the preferences does not open. It should open if there is poseidon.library alive.

For some reason the USB on my desktop has died - no response to an inserted USB stick and Poseidon prefs will not open. I haven't got to the bottom of that yet, but did to try booting from a nightly on CD. My old copy booted fine, USB was back, but it was and old one before the updates backported from ABI 1. So I downloaded and burned the latest nightly and tried to boot from it. This failed due to what looks like the kernal module fat-handler bug, so I rebooted and tried to edit the grub entry to remove the fat module from the module list, but there was no module list to edit, just the kernel packages. So it looks to me that anyone in the same situation as myself, with fat partitons on their hard-drive, would not be able to boot the latest nightly at all.
