Thanks Paolo, I dont mind buying the hardware it is just such a PITA to find what hardware IS compatible. My mobo sound and LAN are, just graphics to find.

ARIX was a new one to me. I know of Pascal's AEROS but ARIX was new. I googled and got to a Sourceforge page which had nothing and the website that linked to was pretty dead.

More Googling found me a page on EAB and a link to ARIX Foundation.. some pretty pix but nothing actually produced.

ARIX IS a good idea. AEROS is too. Quite why they cannot work together is beyond me! But anyway I prefer the LOOK of your Icaros.

I can happen that two cards with the same name use different chip generations. I personally used 9400 for tests. 9600 or 9800 whould also work.

Hi. Unluckily all alternative operating systems share struggling with hardware support: there's more and more hardware to support, less and less time to write drivers for it. That's why I consider ARIX a good idea, after all. Or setting up a bounty for VMware Gallium acceleration, thing that I already proposed here, being ignored by everyone.

But sticking with Icaros, you should consider running it in a virtual machine if you want most things supported, or tailoring your hardware choices to the OS you want to use, there's really nothing else you can do except, obviously, providing the driver yourself. I personally use a GeForce 7800 (or is it a 8800? I don't remember right now) on my desktop AROS machine.

Deadwood, I found your site and read about which cards may be supported.

Is there any info on whether DVI or HDMI work on any? For example I have an offer of a 7950GT which has two DVI and one analogue SVideo output. No VGA.

Your site seems to suggest supported cards end at 8xxx series. Is there any support for any of these (which increase in performance down the table)?

I have a 7300LE card (old & crap machine), a GT670 and now it looks like for AROS I will need to buy something else!

The best compromise Ive been able to find if a person wants to use their gaming pc for aros as well is a socket 1156 i7, coupled with a geforce 5xx series card (most recent gpu supported). While not cutting edge it's still a pretty competent gaming rig. A 580gtx for example is still at least on par with something like a 760gt.
Under AROS the 5xx series doesn't perform as well as the 9600gt I regularly use with aros, but it still gave really nice results for the software we have for AROS.

When I checked a year ago, the 9 series PCI express was dirt-cheap and if you buy to-of-the-line it will be more than than you will even need for AROS. I even remember a thread where someone gave a specific model that is the best performance/support ratio.

The situation with drivers it pretty much the same across all alternative systems. You need to adjust you hardware to the system.

You refer to very old Nvidia cards... Geforce the first time around when they counted 1-2-3,4,5-series,6-series etc.. and now they are on GT2,GT3,GT4 etc up to GT9 now...

And AROS supports what? Up to Series 9 THE FIRST TIME AROUND. Really? PCIE is a bit hit n miss.

I really do want to use AROS but it's a bit of a farce trying to find current hardware that works. I dont want ANOTHER PC just to run AROS. I'd like to run it on my OLD Z68 chipset board with my OLD GTX 670 card, not even on my NEW Z97 board or with my Intel HD Graphics.

My AROS boots a 1920x1080 screen but with a black border around an inch thick... So it does not look right.
