Note, that there already exist open source (GPL) AHI Drivers for SB Live/Audigy. Written by Martin Blom himself. Working in AmigaOS and MorphOS. There's little missing in AROS x86 native, before they would work there too. Something interrupt-number related in PCI hidd. And working software interrupts.

I've done work with the PC speaker before, so making a beep isn't a problem. If you are running hosted in Linux, it's more of a problem since the hardware is normally off limits. I'll just do some code for native mode; hosted has the OSS driver after all.

Yes, that was my guess too. I wrote a simple beep() with the asm/speaker.h macros, but it doesn't sound either.
Could you manage to code such a beep()?
DisplayBeep could be SetFunction()ed later (as ahi.device is not a kernel object) to use AHI drivers.

PC's still come with a speaker for two reasons: diagnostics, and backwards compatibility. You can still get programs that play sound through the PC speaker. They are more curiosities than anything else. My guess is that speaker.h was done with an eye toward using it in DisplayBeep() when no other audio is present.

I'm looking into an emu10K1 driver (SB PCI512/SB Live). There is no definition for a sound HIDD yet, so whoever does the first one sets the standard. As such, I've been going over the other HIDDs and thinking about what would make a good sound HIDD definition that would cover all cards and their capabilities.

The only sound currently is a high-level OSS interface using the unixio HIDD. OSS is now deprecated in Linux, not to mention rather problematic under many situations. That's why it's been replaced with ALSA. AHI for AROS currently has a driver to use the OSS calls. Once a sound HIDD is defined, HIDD drivers for OSS and ALSA can be done for Linux hosted versions of AROS. Making an AHI driver for the HIDD would then work with direct HW drivers or hosted audio equally.

Another thing to look at would then be a version of the audio.device that used the HIDD, along with various audio datatypes.

Because of early PC startup alerts.
Each beep sequence give you advice about a faulty device. My ASUS, for instance, beeps with insistence when the CPU fans are down

But, and to say the truth, i would love to hear "der ring des nibelungen" intro from Amiga1000 at boot.
It would be more sexy than any kernel messages, singing "i'm alive and well"

Hum...
PCSpeaker isn't operational at all, but compiles.
(I'm a hobbyist, learning C, marketing AROS )
Beware: it crashes AHI, replicates itself randomly, etc.

I published the sources here, for everyone to give it a look...
This work is derived from the Void AHI driver (from cvs).
I have used asm/speaker.h macros, but it doesn't go to the point to make sound.

Everyone who wants to play with those files is very welcome!

Okay I have several questions about AHI for AROS and just where it actually is and driver support.

It's obvious that AHI is ported and FILESAVE functionality looks like it might work. However, how about other drivers. I saw where a PC speaker driver was in development on the web elsewhere, and someone is attempting a sound blaster port.. What actually works and what doesn't. That's the big question that I have and what's left to be done..

Everything looks great so far..
