I bet AROS would be the prefered os for playing movies, due to the fact is has no sh*t flying around in the background.

I can imagine people rebooting their systems with a live aros cd, opening a AROS port of Video Lan (VLC) and watching their movies.

That is...

If Aros ever gets sound card support, alternative filesystem support, driver support... etc.. etc..

So far to go

The main intention of the various datatypes I mentioned was to make it simple to introduce a media player and encoder to AROS. Basically, MultiView should be able to play all those videos people have cluttering their harddrives. I know I've got a few (thousand) I wouldn't mind being able to watch in AROS.

I'm not sure how good the current version of MultiView is in AROS. Might have to look into beefing it up... add things like skinning. I'd love to be able to set it to a WinDVD skin. Of course, a WinAMP skin and an mp3/vorbis datatype would do well for playing audio files. Lots of good stuff to work on that would make AROS even nicer.

You mean DivX datatype.

Obviously, you would have some kind of fallback - preferably better than the one used by NewIcons.

The OS already introduced default icons for files lacking a .info file, so it would be easy to alter it so that a failure to locate a datatype would go back to the default, same as if the .info wasn't found.

My order of work on AROS right now is:
- audio driver for my card (define a sound hardware hidd)
- AHI driver for any driver matching the sound hw hidd
- sound datatype
- ffmpeg datatype
- xvid datatype (since some xvid clips won't play with ffmpeg)
- datatypes for various containers (avi, mkv, etc)

I'll re-evaluate what I want to do after that. I have a dual-Celeron system I'm setting up so I can start working on SMP. That's more of a long-term project compared to the above list.

My sound card is a SB512 PCI, but I can do other drivers after I get that one working. I've worked on a number of cards and have another system with AC97 audio to check on. Other than that, anyone have a request for specific hardware? I may or may not be able to test it, but I can certainly write it for you to test.

I'm sorry, I'm afraid you can't use the latest version of notepad because you don't have the latest divx codecs installed.

Well, I'd rather work on a Flash datatype anyhow. What I might look at later is a change to icons to allow datatypes to be used on the imagery. That way you can use whatever the heck you want for your icon... like a nice MPEG4 (DivX/XviD) clip, or any number of datatype supported picture formats.

Well, AmigaOS never concerned itself with such frills before...

I'm with the fantastic Mr. Fox on this one, anyway. Flash icons would annoy the heck out of me. Might be nice to use Flash for a toolbar/dock though, for the kids.

I think a "interactive icon" would be anoying...

Yes, but AmigaOS has never concerned itself with security, so why start now?

Seriously, you could make a pref that disabled aspects that could lead to security issues, much as browsers allow disabling aspects of Java and Javascript.

How's this for a weird idea - flash icons. That way, you get vector and bitmap animations, plus interactivity for your icons.

Might that be dodgy from a security standpoint?
