There are some config files under

AROS:system/network/arostcp/dp

Bust some of the stuff looks unused

As far as I remember, local speed and ftp are good under aros (I remember another discussion about it);

Concerning the main topic subject, I know there is several issues (drivers, stack, owb, etc... whatever), creating that "slow internet speed". Things that specialists (not me, sadly) will have to fix in the future.

But my current question is "is there someone who knows what (and where) is the aros counterpart of Morphos netstack.config file ? ;)

So I just could make my own tests for my personal "research". And if it improve something, I'll let you know ;)

thanks !

Main problem I see with "internet speed" is the low speed of OWB.

OWB on my ARESOne is becomming slower and slower until I have to do a shutdown and restart. Maybe a native OWB or one that got some other updates would help a lot.

But OWB is a different problem, I would not try to do performance tests with OWB on the Internet, I would prefere FTP in an intranet. Not only one connection but also with different FTP servers on a LAN.

ome of the slowness (imho) comes from the way drivers pass recieved data to the stack/listening apps - so fixing it wont exactly be easy and would likely be incompatable with AmiTCP.

Maybe someone that knows more about this stuff could make some suggestions, BSD internet stack is still free and if it has to be done a new IP stack could get rid of the AOS3.x Sana interface.

I don't know, but don't you think it worth to test any kind of tweak, to see if there is any improvement ?

If someone knows where the "netstack.config" file is in aros, lets give the path, and let's try the tweak.

Ff the tweak gives no result...If not, too bad, but at least we tried, no ?

I dont think it is as simple as just blaming AROSTCP (and while MorphOS has a port of AROSTCP, they arent identical - so settings on MorphOS dont necessarily exist on AROS), some of the slowness (imho) comes from the way drivers pass recieved data to the stack/listening apps - so fixing it wont exactly be easy and would likely be incompatable with AmiTCP.

Anyhow without propper profiling/testing all this is just speculation, and it may simply be the drivers are all badly written (atleast with regard to operating in an AmigaOS like environment).

P.S - Parts of AROSTCP arent based on "old" bsd code since they had to be updated (for instance the internal IP address handling broke on AROS64 and Stanislaw had to update it).

So....No one knows where the same file exists on AROS ?

ENVARC:sys/net/netstack.config (on morphos).

Fab (morphos OWB maintainer/dev) said that tweak would probably help for speed issues on AROS, the only thing is to find the aros counterpart of morphos "ENVARC:sys/net/netstack.config" file.

Think about it : on Morphos, with those tweaks I went from a 400ko/s to a 1.1mo/s.

It's a simple tweak to add to aros, not complex rewriting of amitcp. It can be an improvement. The problem is that I don't found the correct file to test this tweak.

It is well known that the AROS tcp/ip stack is based on very old BSD code written before gigabit networks were common. It is probably worthwhile for someone to start a bounty to update or replace AROStcp with something current and including support for ipv6 and to possibly have internal instrumentation features similar to the Web100.org/Web10g.org (linux based) projects to verify performance comparable to today's linux tcp/ip stack.

It would be so cool.

By the way I tried to apply the morhOS tweaks on my aros computer, I've been able to enter the "setenv" command line, but not the other stuff (extra line in netstack.config), because it's not the same "tree". There is not "net" drawer in envarc:sys/

I don't have miore information about the amiTCP problem. The only thing I understood is because it's an old piece of software.

The clue on amitcp possible problem for internet speed has been given by "Fab", the man who is behind the great OWB morphOS port. Because the same internet speed problem I had on Aros repeated (a bit faster) on MorphOS.

So Fab explained me that it was certainly the fault of Amitcp.

He also gave me some tweaks (on Morphos) to improve the download rate.

I added these lines on ENVARC:sys/net/netstack.config

TCP_RECVSPACE=32768
TCP_SENDSPACE=32768

And I pushed the numbers to 60000. Higher numbers make me loosing the network.

TCP_RECVSPACE=60000
TCP_SENDSPACE=60000

Then, on a shell I entered that command :

setenv save OWB_POLLTIME 1

I restarted the computer, and then on MorphOS I reached 1.1Mo/s on download (downloading the morphos iso for test), wich is almost as good as on mac OSX tiger (firefox 3.6)on the same machine.

Waiting for a better solution, it gave me some valuable speed : On morphOS I went from a slow 400ko/s to 1.1mo/s with those tweaks.

Of course I don't know if those MorphOS tweaks can be usefull for AROS too. I just explain how Fab told me about the possible amiTCP problem. If I understood correctly, the 2 problems for modern internet speed (on aros or morphos) are amitcp and of course ethernet drivers.

Finally, there REALLY is a internet speed issue (on aros or morphos). If you have a high internet speed at home, simply try to compare it with diferent OSes on the same machine (best test). Use a good, reliable and strong server for download the same iso, and compare the rates, for exemple. And you'll see it ;)

If this is true, then of course it would be great to fix amiTCP. However, let's try to collect a little more information to see if this a true bottleneck.

For example, perhaps other people could post their maximum Internet connection speeds with AROS to see if there's a limit beyond which we haven't reached.

Aside from this, did the person who told you there could be a problem with amiTCP explain what that problem is?
