Hey, I got another one.. :) just tried to boot Aros from floppy on my ThinkPad 486dx2 oldschool machine.

GRUB is loaded correctly, everything seems to be ok after the selection ("Reallocating ExecBase.. Clearing FastMem.. "),
but after a while I get the messages:

"No bootable disk was found."
"Please insert a bootable disk in any drive."

Nothing happens if i try to reinsert the disk.. :(

The disk runs on my other machines perfectly.

Not all floppies are compatible. I ran into this years back in FUSION PC. Most floppy controllers follow a particular Intel standard. However, a few (especially laptop floppies) tried to save a buck by using an incompatible floppy controller. As long as you used the BIOS to access the floppy, everything was fine. If you tried to bang on it in hardware, it failed.

That sounds like you're problem here. The initial boot of GRUB uses the BIOS, so that works. However, AROS tries to access the floppy at a hardware level, and that runs into the incompatible controller and results in no bootable media available.

Short answer - no. The PC's floppy controller tries to decode the data as IBM standard MFM. The Amiga used a variation of MFM more suited to decoding via the Blitter. As such, the Amiga floppy interface fed you raw data which was then decoded via the cpu and/or the blitter.

Clever Amiga programmers took advantage of this to do all kinds of things like making each track one big sector to allow more data per track. Some did special encoding formats that weren't even MFM to squeeze a few more bytes off each track. That is why most Amiga floppy games are stored as special raw formats when archived.
