Yep. Most trouble I had was when my dad went out and bought a Dell. Piece junk couldn't even be stripped for parts to some extent because everything in a Dell is custom. Useless case, useless power supply, useless cables... I was able to salvage the RAM, floppy, and DVD, and that was it.

Do the same here... Might as well. They are going to call me for support no matter what. It is eaiser when I know exactly what they have and how it was put together.

I'm aware of these things because I put together systems for my dad, my younger brother, an older brother, and an older gentleman I sometimes play guitar with in town. I also still have people call me from my last place of employment when they need computer help.

I put together my own systems (except laptops and Macs) and often give my old system to a family member. My younger brother got my Athlon XP system when I built my Opteron system.

It's a good thing I like working on computers or I'd go nuts. :rasta:

EIDE is IDE, the only difference was more commands were defined. The physical connector is the same. You may mean a slimline CD IDE connector as opposed to the 3.5" IDE connector. Something like this:

You can also find adapters for 2.5" IDE to 3.5" IDE:

I am putting together a computer for Mom. I will be using a "slim" Cd-RW. I can find these all over the place. What I am having touble with is...the EIDE to Standard IDE converter cable. I need one of these to connect the slim CD-RW to the motherborad. I am having a hard time finding this this.....anyone know where I can get one?????

Dave

Her PC has been down for over a month now. I can't stand to listen to how she can't get email from the grandkids and can't pay her bills online. 60 years old and she is a complete computer Geek. Installs her own software (properly), does a good job of keeping her Virus protection up to date. Write her own batch files for Pete's sake.. Heck she even installed her own Modem... She draws the line at building her own system. "That's mens work." go figure.....
