@ombaudsman

What is MicroXP ? I want this as well !!

I am using a Dell Latitude 6410, only VESA Graphic works for me.... giving a prediction about wether it works or not is nearly impossible. So best thing is to burn Icaros Distro on a DVD and boot from DVD in order to try. If things fail, oben PCITool and find out Vendor/Model numbers of your Sound/Network/etc. Post them here or check the WIKI linked above.

However, removed my Wificard out of the DELL and put a compatible Atheros Wifi (3,50? on ebay) into the WAN port, and voila -> it works. On other Notebooks you can probably use the WLAN Port as most of them are miniPCI

regards Gero

Without question ACER aspire one A110, A150 and ZG5 should be all you are looking for. Fully supported by AROS.

So, what's the BEST old (p3 or p4) notebook to buy in order to be able to run AROS with everything working?

I'm willing to get a new (old) one just for it! :)

Jeff:

Thanks for the kind reply. I've tried the VM version a couple of weeks ago (on Oracle's Virtual Box) with no success at all. This can be well down to my own stupidity as I've never tried a virtual PC before (well, DOS Box, but that doesn't count, does it?). But said that... I've tried installing a number of Linuxes on this Dell without succes, which is strange as I did manage to run OpenSOLARIS and, IIRC, Knoppix from LiveCDs. Installing either of them on the harddisk led to a non booting laptop. Ah well... I must be getting old I guess...

After the holidays I'll give it another try,

I would recommend Icaroshttp://vmwaros.blogspot.com/

but the Dell laptop is not the most compatible at the moment. The Intel 915 graphics may work with the gma900 driver, else it will be vesa mode. Sound may work with the ac97 or HDAUDIO driver but it's untried. As with some Dell's the ethernet is a Broadcom chipset with no support.

Jeff.

Now a true noob question:

I'm typing this on my Dell Latitude D610, Windows XP machine and am wanting to try-out AROS. To prevent me from burning tons of CDs only to find out they're not working I could use some advise on which version should give me the biggest chance of working.

c610 is better supported than the c510.
very little reliable information about c510 on the net.

c510
IDE - yep
Graphics - if radeon see below
Audio - maestro3 - no support (i think)
USB - yep
Ethernet - ?

C610
IDE - yep
Graphics - Radeon - driver works but depends if anything displays - works externally
Audio - ac97.audio should work
USB - yep
Ethernet - 3com 3c905C should work

Check here for more information...

The internal NIC is quite likely to be an Intel PRO/100, which we have a driver for. But your wireless adapter won't work unless it's actually an ethernet-to-wireless bridge.
