Oh, and disk operations seem faster on OS4/Mos 2.4, but then, there seems to be a problem with the fat filesystem in Aros - I can only get about 240KB p/s from external usb devices - I have tried on all 3 Aros systems I use.

Yes, looking at it objectively I think the speed/responsiveness I am seeing in the Mos/OS 4 systems is just down the the gfx driver (moving, resizing etc windows).

The system is very responsive and lovely to use - but is no where near as quick as my 1ghz Peg II (for gui/disk operations anywayz) or my G3 A1 for that matter.

I am running Icaros on a 2,6 GHz Athlon64 X2 with 1 GB of DDR2/800 RAM, EIDE drive and GeForce 7800 card, and the nearby SAM system with AmigaOS 4.1 is NO WAY faster. Speed issues you notice are due mostly to the fact that AROS code is still in alpha stage (so: there is much space for improvements), and partly to the fact that AROS must be written to support a indefinite number of hardware combinations.

No, its okiez. I sometime get a little frustrated and go a little "off the handle". My apologies.

Perhaps I am too used to the proprietory hardware of the AmigaOne/Efika/Pegasos systems, but I was just hoping that someone could release an all supported Aros system... in a nice Aros/Imica/AresOne etc badged case. :)

For this to work, we would have to support their efforts, and thats all I was suggesting. Steven and yourself seem content with things as they are, so I guess who am I to rock the boat?

Best of british luck to you both. :)

Fair enough, I can also see your point.

Incidentally, its faster than Mos and OS4? Seriously? Im running Icaros 1.1.5 on a 3.1 Ghz Athlon XP with Fx5200, sb live and 2 gb ram (yes, I know, only like 100 Mb of it is actually getting used).

The system is very responsive and lovely to use - but is no where near as quick as my 1ghz Peg II (for gui/disk operations anywayz) or my G3 A1 for that matter.

The new NVidia driver seems snappier though, but I have only just started testing it - might run some drawing tests between the two and report the difference.

Still, could just be me. :)

Ok maybe i misunderstood your posts(in other threads). I'm sorry.

Icaros is the main distribution and i will use it for alltime as such.

Steve and i have a agreement: He does the Mini-itx boxes and i take the ATX-Route. So there is a minimum of competition.

But i don`t see the problems you are talking about? Who is pulling in different directions? You have to see all develompent as a whole... If it is Imica,AresOne,Netbooks, SB16, UAE-Integration - every little step helps to get more attention. more attention -> more users -> more developement -> faster progress -> better future.

I will try this(maybe it will work, if not at least there will be no lost):http://aros-exec.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3811&start=0&PHPSESSID=0441516f1a438c69956fdb9caf84bc0b

I see both sides of this argument but I think there already is a set standard of sorts for aros hardware. For example, I just got a 2ghz dell workstation for free from someone upgrading.

I took it home, loaded icaros... Oh crap the built in video only does vesa, sound does not work, network card also not supported. Luckily, it has 3 pci slots...

There is a simple solution, I installed an ablive, supported network card and supported nvidia pci graphics card. Fixing the problem and making this pc aros supported cost me just 50.00$. For 50.00$ to me its not worth crying for somone to write drivers for this computer. Now it has accellerated graphics and sound, is faster than an os4/morph/68k machine
and it cost me 50.00$ in total since the main unit was free.

I see the problems with aros drivers much like my early experience with linux (Back in the red-hat 4.0 days!)
Back then, linux driver support was horrible. You basically had to build a pc from scratch using parts from the supported hardware list.

I remember having to buy parts bit by bit, searching through all kinds of suppliers double checking each part was on the list and all these things. In my view, that was a small price to pay to learn linux and be able to get away from windows.

Today, I can load linux on just about any pc and most pc's work with a vanilla install. Will aros eventually work like that? - I hope so but if not, its okay because I know how to plug a sound/video and network card in.

BTW, I'll gladly take your money for one of these 2ghz dell's with sblive, network and accellerated graphics, but
I think your better off doing it yourself.

Steven

Sorry, but I STRONGLY disagree.

If only a single, or small set of COMPLETE drivers were worked on, there would be more resources available to update/change them to suit the newer replacement hardware as needed. If driver development resources are spread thinly over a heap of half completed hardware then everytime something new is released, how are the resources going to cover this?

A simple example - If ONLY a driver for a relatively new, cheap and easily obtainable gfx card, lets call it the GF1000 chipset for the sake of argument, was developed, then when the GF1010 was released it would receive a the attention required to complete a full driver in a reasonable amount of time.

This is the part covered by my "I can PARTIALLY agree with you" premise. However, you don't seem to catch how open source works and how you can drive it to do what you want. Being opens means 1st of all being free. Free to share the code, but also free to develop what you want. AROS developers are not 'hired' to do things by a 'company' or a 'team master' who decides what to do today: it's up to everyone's head to decide. You can't change this, more or less as you can't force Hyperion to release source code for OS4, or you can't force Amiga Inc to let people use the 'Amiga' brand as they wish.

You say that AROS should choose a common platform? I CAN agree for practical reasons, at least to give people that wish to spend their money (believe in me, they are a minority) in new hardware a sure hit. But if you want it, the best you can do is forming a company, taking your decision and hire new/pay current developers to do what you want, before the deadline you set, and so on. Then, release all you have paid for as open source as well, if you really wish to help the project and not capitalize on it. Have you noticed? Is more or less what Phoenixkonsole and ClusterUK are doing.

Quote:
Open source has plenty of merits. Lack of a viable business model, and resource management skills are NOT some of them. :(

Also commercial model has plenty of merits, IMHO: viable business model and resource management skills are at the basis of it, but then you can't see the code and you must pay for USING it. Again, if you're looking for a working supported platform, do a better search (I am waiting for a Compaq N610C I won at ebay, which has been reported to be almost completely supported. If it's true, I can sell you for $900. Not $1000, 'cos wireless is still not supported), or buy a SAM with AmigaOS4 or a MacMini with MorphOS, or just pay bounties to get the drivers for hardware you need, or form a company like already suggested.

Quote:
No one is saying to DROP existing Aros drivers. What I am saying is GOING FORWARD there needs to be some sort of direction or sanity to Aros development... 12 years on and there is still not a single fully supported laptop/netbook that I know of - How about we just continue on like this for another couple of decades? :)

form a company, pay people, and then give the orders you wish.

I dont have a problem! I dont remember directing any of my comments towards you in a derogatory manner!? I have NO problem with you building/selling an Aros compatible system.

Furthermore I was actually speaking on behalf of people like yourself and Stephen who are attempting to bring an all in one compatible Aros solution to the mainstream market, so dont go attacking the one person who is actually defending your efforts!

If you can bring a fully compatible Aros system to market - GREAT, Ill take one. THAT is my bloody point. We need to support the efforts of people like yourself and Stephen so that we might see a complete hardware solution.

This will never happen when everyone is pulling in different directions.

I cannot believe I am actually having to explain this! Anywho, why not go the whole hog? How about we bring out another dozen Aros distros to compete with Icaros? Each one semi complete and offering features not present in the others. Then we can have a dozen partitions on our harddrives and install them all.... nice.

Lets explain the AresOne concept:

-it costs as much as every other PC with the same specs
-it uses a ATX board with enough PCI slots to add whatever you want.
- you can use Windows 7 / Linux /Reactos / Heiku or whatever you want.
- My os of choice is AROS and i will support it with the money i get through selling pc`s and components which are supported by AROS

-its my personal AROS developer-system if you like : i will spend money to get more Hardware supported(this includes other systems too) - i will spend money for software projects.

-The system gets a SB Live and a Gallium3D supported Graphiccard to support AROS as much as possible.

-My next step is to get Catweasel supported

-> after all i'm planing to (let) build a own Board (as concept) first details not before Cebit 2010. I call it the "missing link".

Regards,

Pascal

The AresOne is not a official Aros-System its just a PC which comes with AROS preinstalled. And my next one will be a own system with which uses AROS as Main-os - also not a offical AROS-system but made for AROS and AOS.

If you like to have a supported netbook - spend your money for a bounty.
