Hi Cammy, first of all welcome on AROS Exec, I often read messages from you on other Amiga community sites and I'm really pleased by your coming here. Thanks also for supporting Icaros in your signature.

The system you are proposing is really interesting. Unluckily, I think that for practical reasons we should go for the Intel road instead, because one of the most critical issues about AROS is driver development. The Atom platform is already half supported thanks to ClusterUK's efforts on the iMica: the system boots fine on EeePCs/Aspire Ones and clones, and there are good chances to get network, video and audio supported in the near future. Adding development job, to support another platform, would be probably overkill.

OTOH, I think that netbooks really are the new Amiga 1200s. They are cheap, little underpowered but substantially equal each other, so they really constitute a 'platform' in the common meaning of the word. And AROS should support it.

The price is good, indeed.

The full specs are on the page. It uses the S3G Unichrome Pro II graphics chip, which there is plenty of documentation for and open source drivers for Linux available.

More Information about the used Chipset is needed to tell, if its possible to make AROS Drivers for it.

I'm learning to code in AmigaE, I was wondering if this would be of any use in writing drivers for AROS, or is that just for C coders?

Drivers are part of the aros build system.
Anything there is writte in C/C++

It may not be impossible to write a driver in E but I think a lot of infra structure code would have to be written, before you can start writing drivers in E.

The most attractive thing is we can buy these brand new, single or in bulk lots. They're unbranded and come with no OS pre-installed, so we can call them whatever we want and stick AROS and Ubuntu on them. It's just my dream anyway, and I noticed you guys started a topic about it and thought I'd throw my idea out there for consideration or ridicule.

That would be a very cool laptop. I like the style and even the yellow color. I wonder if they could be branded with the word AROS on it and using the AROS font.

I am trying to learn E (PortablE) too but I doubt it can be used to write drivers right now. I think the C Language is the defacto standard for drivers and low level hardware programming. I could be wrong however.

How is your E programming going? Are you getting good results in AROS?

Perhaps try the iMica device driver. It is RTL8168 and rtl8111D, as that is used in the iMica skt775 board for gigabit speed.

@James007

Yes it installs and runs fine from the hard drive. :)

@paolone

Thanks for all of your hard work. Gave me the incentive to wipe the drive on my aspireone and install icaros :)

So the rtl8168 network driver doesn't work/not supported at the moment.?

Jeff

the rtl8168 network adapter is supported, the problem is that there's no rtl8168 adapter in my Aspire One.
