Oh and one final point there are two things stopping the Atom based iMica from being a brilliant little Amiga type computer and they are that Aros only uses one core, and the processor has to move the graphics around the screen with VESA so putting a stupid load on the processor.

If and when we get native driver upgrade and dual core, the Atom would be IMHO a truly superb low power consumption computer for the Amiga fan.

For now, I don't know...my main objective is to have a simple, tiny, fast, quiet and low electric consumtion (less than 100w, the lower the better) net browsing and media center machine, and if possible, an amiga-like one (powerpc or x86).

Depends of aros dev, the only thing I know is that I'll buy a new amiga-like computer this year ;)

If in no hurry wait and see next version, to be honest if I run Windows 7 on my iMica which I have dual booting then microsoft media player can play HD 1280x720 movies nice and smooth and full screen.

Even on the slow old Atom processor. Remember Windows uses both cores and it has the video chip to do scaling.

Happy to demo it but instead of ?199 add ?100 for Windows licence and another gb ram and bigger drive.

Later upgrade to full fat processor board.

Even Aros can run DVD resolution movies in a window while you do something else like run Amiga software in another window. Atom is not a bad little chip.

It is possible to build the iMica system with a 2.5" hard drive which would be quieter still. However, I have not tested this so up to you.

Hi Dimitri

Quote:

how much noise do you obtain with a atom based mini pc (with mini itx or itx case) ? I'm searching for a VERY quiet computer (my old amiga 1200 is compact flash SSS based, so it's absolutly quiet...I 'd prefer obtain a result like that for my next gen amiga). I tried shuttle pcs, they're noisy, like a truck ^^

New red case is a lot quiter than my MicroATX case

Do you think a SSD harddrive could be a good idea for a AROS based x86 amiga ?

No, to expensive at moment

DO the atom provided on the mainboard you 're talking about will be a real upgrade comparing to my actual p4 1.8ghz with 128mb nvidia card ?

far from it, it is a low power usage and nice small computer to turn on and off. If you want performance wait for the next ITX board we go for. Not decided which yet though. Unfortunately MicroATX and quiet not usually compatible without spending money.

are that type of mainboard makes lot of heat ? can we use passive cooling on it ?

iMica has very small quiet fan which you cannot hear above the hard drive.

what type (how many watts) of powersupply can we use in a basic setup (just a dvdrom, ssd hard drive) ?

Full system uses less than 100w, psu rated at 150w so will take new faster board and full fat processors..

Ok, but please consider these processors:

> Phenom II 545, Athlon II 250, Athlon X2

Look at frequencies and TDP values and remember you'll use a fraction of that power with AROS (no second core available). This would leave the option for a powerful machine when booting off Linux or Windows.

1. When prices will be cut to a honest level (now they aren't)

2. No. Atom processors are good performer in the energy saving department, not in the speed one.

Your current 1.8 P4 is way faster than any Atom processor due to different and more powerful architecture.

Not so amazingly faster, after all, but faster. If you're looking for speed, please consider a 3 GHz Phenom II processor on a micro-ATX AMD board.

interesting. I'm thinking about my next amiga computer (future atom aros box, or morphos maxc g4, depends of future dev on each side...as my actual p4 is quite outdated), and i'm looking after compact cases and low electic consumtion.

So I have some questions for the mini tx specialist you are :

how much noise do you obtain with a atom based mini pc (with mini itx or itx case) ? Hi all, I have decided that as some people like building there own computer and other have some of the parts necessary I would create a Build your own iMica page on my site.

I do not give instruction on how to do it, to many law suits but give you the list of parts and where to get them.

However if you like software but hardware is not your thing then I am happy to build them for you as for others.

Remember this is about promoting Aros.
