sure you can -- but you have to build a player app first. :) you could even design a player that plays back audio files as videos or iamges as audio! :) (whatever the use of that would be). the thing about pure data, max and similar languages is, that they provide a lot of funcionality, that even a programming amateur can use. sure it's no substitute for real compiled end user apps - but it's a fucking cool thing to have! for those who don't know max programming languages: they are graphical languages (with command boxes you connect through cables) that allow you to do audio, video and general data processing. they're original job was to allow complex midi opeations, and they were designed for musicians and media artists, but they were gradually expanded throughout the late 80ies and 90ies and allow you now to build complex vj patches, complex audio processing, and even complex network operations. i'm personally using maxmsp 5 on mac right now, but having pd on aros would be cool :)

it may be a good way to work (wrappers for other amiga NG os support), clearly.
But native ports are always faster I think ! By the way, AROS supports audigy sound card, wich is a good middle range home studio sound card (24bit, full duplex, 2 stereo OUT, midi port). A lot of modern ac97 and "hobby" sound cars are full duplex today, too. I'd love to see big apps like audacity or ardour on Aros, but djing and fun software too (as I'm already using Mixxx and Tracktor with hardware dj control tables).

About Audacity, i know there is a bounty on AOS 4 for porting wxwidgets, used by audacity: once the port is done maybe can be modified to support zune/MUI instead of reaction. Else a parallel bounty can be set up for wxwidgets/mui wrapper...

I know that AROS would be great for music prod..
Most of the time its not AROS that crash it's the prog.. Just look at how great OWB works with AROS. Never crashed my mashine.

now audacity would be a nice thing to have on aros!
i even read that audacity has one of the best conversion engines (coming originally from sox) look at that chart to see differences between various algorithms converting from 96khz to 44.1khz: http://src.infinitewave.ca/

Plateform matters a lot, I think. A lot of modern musicians goes on mac or linux for the stability (no virus, no complex drivers or whatever), the ready to use features (see ubuntu studio for example). Jut plug, and play music. It's why (I think) a lot of musicians (electronic music, like techno, etc...) loved mod trackers more than cubase and stuff like that.
Quote: About music itself - all modern apps , it's heavily apps which user sometime can't understand from first time You're right for some softwares : reason, cubase, ardour...are professional programs, like adobe products. But others are very user friendly : ableton, fruity loops (who are, basically, modern fancy trackers), mixxx, traktor, djstudio... mixxx is the perfect example : a song on deck1, a song on deck 2, and you mix it. Simple as that. And the sources are freely available. Yes you're right too for the stability, it's a feature you need in a production purpose. But before making an aros machine the perfect home studio machine, we have to start somewhere, and create interest (not only for amiga fans) for this plateform I think... ;)
