Regarding C:RexxC, I think AmigaOS4.x has a rather
elegant solution for Arexx and Shell scripts.

They have been placed inside S:

S:Arexx
S:Shell

As far as I know, 'S' stands for Scripts?

These two directories are part of the normal Path.

---

Also, I think Utilities and Tools could be merged.

---

Also, for AROS, in general, what is stopping us from
borrowing ideas from AmigaOS 4.x? The ideas are indeed
Amiga-like, and I feel AROS could benefit from them.

I don't know if this would be called "stealing" of IP??

The Assign Mess is something I personally hate, but I have to cope with this, since many applications included in VmwAROS wouldn't work without their damn private assigns. I could move these assigns into scripts I could create to alunch those apps, but they wouldn't work anymore if assigned to open a certain kind of file. As example, Lunapaint has its own assign: without it, it simply doesn't work.

I can replace the LP executable with a script that:

ASSIGN lunapaint: extras:apps/Lunapaint
run lunapaint_exe >NIL:

the need for many run smthg >NIL: is due to the fact that I have to launch those applications to let 'em run in the background, without making their output windows appear. Cut all these >NIL: and you'll get a mess on the screen. I won't move them to WBStartup, since I don't personally like this solution. Applications must live in the place they're supposed to be, and that place is their own drawers. WBStartup is for USERS, not for distributors.

Well see that:

5) I don't really find the "package" system in ENV:sys/packages appealing, but I understand this is some agreed standard in AROS, so what I did is to rewrite all .../s/package-startup scripts to have relative, not absolute paths. What's the use for package system if you have to change paths in several files, when you move application directories?

So I really don't like this package system, but it will really be better to have assigns and such in s/package-startup...

As for run >nil: <nil:, I created "service" scripts for which I got criticised, i.e. my arostcp.service is:

.key STATE/A
.bra {
.ket }

Failat 21

if {STATE} eq "start"
run >NIL: <NIL: c:services/arostcp
;.... some more here to check if it works
endif

if {STATE} eq "stop"
RX >NIL: "address AROSTCP; KILL"
endif

Failat 10

Now all I do in my startup-sequence is:

arostcp.service start

(of course it has to be added to path and set S), same with yafs, iprefs, decoration and so on...

P.S. Oh - I forgot. I really DID move all amiga-style commmands to C: and all unix-style binaries to sys:gnu/bin (from whole wmvdistribution). Same with libraries. It really works as it should!

Oh, I forgot too: good luck with VmwAROS updates.

The reason why VmwAROS loosely follows the nightly build scheme is that I want it easy to update. This way, you have only to overwrite files you need, and you're still OK, being it a official VmwAROS update disk or a nightly build (well, in the latter case you'll destroy icons, but this is up to you). The day nightlies will be simplified, VmwAROS will too.

Hi qus,

first of all, thanks for having proposed this subject, since it is something I feel important too. I have to answer you that the dir structure of AROS has got the way it is for many reasons, first of all licensing concerns and, IMHO, some little lack of global vision. For instance, we have several "thematic" directories in extras (Networking, GNU, Games, etc), along with "private" ones (one for all: DOpus). Shouldn't DOpus be included in a "FileManage" or at leas a more generic "Programs" drawer?

We have also many interesting and most-useful tools inside too many directories. Shouldn't things like unzip and tar stay all-included in a better place? Why one is in extras and the other in Development? Coders are not the only ones that would use tar: I use it every time I have to archive something from AROS.

Moreover: is there any reason to keep in year 2009 both Tools and Utilities drawers? Wouldn't be easier to join them (? la AmigaOS 4)? And why our sound preferences are sill named 'AHI'? What should this term suggest to someone who has never used/followed Amiga in the latest years? We can give AHI all its importance even if its prefs tool is called "Sound", which at least means the same thing for everyone.

I don't know if the re-organization you are proposing is the best option available (I disagree on some points), but you're right when you say that many things should be moved in other places to be coherent. The only issue with this, is that many things that are included into AROS are not part of AROS itself but are contributed software which happens to let AROS work better. There is a discussion to move AROSTCP somewhere else, and I am amazed that nobody has already made questions about the license.

About the only thing I personaly agree with is moving the images to Prefs/presets - the rest either are a> down to personal preferance, or b> just plain ugly (as ugly as you suggest it is already atleast ;p)

Actually some feedback I got from DEV list!

The themes and images directories should not be where they are now. I moved them to sys:prefs/presets/ without a problem. It's strange why they didn't land there in the first place...

Also I was told sys:rexxc is for arex scripts, and that they should be kept there...

Also I was told inittab is very stupid idea
