Paolone,

Like I said, I am SO THANKFUL for your efforts and enthusiasm...

I was never a naysayer, NEVER, though I must admit I tried AROS years ago and quickly gave up, thinking it far too young to really run and get any use out of (I'm not a programmer really, I dabble, but no, not a programmer) For anyone but real programmers at that time, I thought it was interesting but not so useful yet.

AROS last year has been exciting. I started running AROS on a spare machine 6 months before owb came out. My opinion now is that its ALMOST ready for my everyday machine. I just got a new pc to run AROS on, but I'm waiting for your next icaros release before doing the installation. (so hurry up!) :)

I'm really hoping that we get an ibm extended ansi telnet application, more audio editors and trackers, Some 3d titling and video editing applications...How about text to speech and speech recognition programs? I'm sure they will be coming to AROS if we are all patient enough.

I'm going to try and learn how to port amiga os applications just so I can try and help the effort more.
Protracker for AROS anyone?

:)

Steven

Things are finally melting together on AROS, giving a more detailed view of the whole picture. Features are slowly but regularily going in place, and even people against AROS in the Amiga community are progressively changing their mind. We are, in a few word, at the point I predicted several times in the past, when the project was more fractioned, development was really slow and many people were discouraged: be brave and don't loose enthusiasm, I always said, better times will come. And they came.

Now it's only matter of not loosing the momentum, and going on this road. Regards,

Paolone,

I am so happy to hear that you will include protrekker.
I am also so glad that you are doing such great work on icaros so we can all enjoy aros more.

Its REALLY starting to feel like an everyday machine the more I use it lately. I have been very busy with work but soon I will install aros on this newer pc I got, a 3ghz machine with 4 gigs ram, sblive and ati video card...

I can't wait to see aros flying on that box WITH your classic application support, AND protrekker.

There is so much good news about AROS lately. OWB, then more trackers, and now this, I'm excited by AROS lately.

It will be included, yes. Version 1.1.2 is scheduled for june, depending on how things melt together.

Paolone,

I wish I could be more help but I don't know why your having these clipboard problems.

I'm very excited at this method you've come up with, how well do the applications seem to run on the desktop?

Getting the clipboard to work would be great, but for now I'd use it as it is even without any communication between legacy apps and aros apps.

When do you think you'll release a new icaros desktop with this included?

Also, will you be including the newest build of the protrekkr music tracking program that just got ported
successfully? Its a great program, please include it in the new icaros build!

6. UAE to use AROS clipboard.

Regarding the point 6 discussed here, Clipboard function is important, and in theory it basically requires only requires the CLIPS: dir to be shared in AROS and AmigaOS running in E-UAE.
One can change the line in the s:startup-sequence:
Quote:
Assign CLIPS: RAM:Clipboards

to somewhere in the hard-drive (both in AROS and AmigaOS).
Reality naturally tends a bit more complex, since it regards the nature of contents handling and the fact that some Amiga apps don't actually use the clipboard.device or use it wrongly...

I am investigating clipboard sharing, but my initial tests are quite awful. I've added this device to Janus-UAE configuration:

dev RAM1:
path RAM Disk:
volume name "AROS Ram"

and modified AmigaOS' startup-sequence to

ASSIGN CLIPS: RAM1:Clipboards

and now, if I use for instance NoWinEd and I copy some text from AROS, I can see the "0" file even in AmigaOS (entering the shell and typing "multiview clips:0" works, but if I try to 'more' it, more complains there might be binary content in 0). The problem is that I tried many AmigaOS programs, from MultiView to Personal Paint and Personal Write, but nothing happens trying to paste the AROS text, and nothing happens if I copy portions of text or graphics in AmigaOS: everytning in Clips: seems to remain unchanged, no more files are created, nothing I can read from AROS.

And, this drives me crazy, if I copy/paste between Amiga applications in the same J.UAE session, everything works as expected. So maybe changing the assign is not enough, and I need some more help here.

E-UAE with GTK-MUI *is* already a Commodity, as it has a Zune GUI. It is listed in exchange, but I have never tested it. Hiding the GUI will most likely crash UAE, as my GDK is not a real port, just some fast hacked stubs.

Of course the other point 2 is where it resides the main problem. The use of system resource as Screen, windows and access to PUBLIC SCREEN!

Having that sorted out I believe that you could apply for the bounty looking at it's current feature request.

Something seems to be happening with point no 2. on o1i's blog??

and if you want to be real thorough and go beyond what is defined in the bounty... you can try and satisfy piru, some of these points have been completed by paolone!!!

Can you drag icons to the 68k applications?
Do the 68k application appicons appear on the host desktop?
Can you share data between separate 68k applications?
Can you access the host filesystem transparently from within the 68k applications?
Can the 68k applications communicate via ARexx?
Does it support programs that run in multiple windows, with freedom to drag and resize the windows on the host desktop?
Can 68k apps open to specific host pubscreen, and can they jump between ones? Can you run MUI 68k apps?
Can you run networking 68k apps?

Quote:
Objectives:

1. Must be able to run some classical software which must include: WordWorth 6, Organizer 2, Datastore 2 and Money Matters 4.*

2. Must provide support for window and screen based apps so they appear to be running on the host system - including access to public screens.

3. Doubling-clicking a 68k application in Wanderer will cause that application to be run in the emulation.

4. Each instance of emulation will be a commodity that can be shut down via Exchange.

5. Port over a Zune based UAE prefs application.

6. UAE to use AROS clipboard.

7. separate directory (for 68K files) dictated by the chosen config.

Point 7 is obvious and naturally depends much on the nature of the system install files and the application resources.

Regarding the point 6 discussed here, Clipboard function is important, and in theory it basically requires only requires the CLIPS: dir to be shared in AROS and AmigaOS running in E-UAE.
One can change the line in the s:startup-sequence:

Point 5 is well underway with O1i works.

Point 4 is a matter of turning E-UAE into a commodity, which is not entirely difficult, but it might pose some stability issues!

Point 3 could be considered as proof of concept achieved. Paolone work only requires a bit more integration and being independent from Amiga Forever package, but he's probably sorting all that!

Of course the other point 2 is where it resides the main problem. The use of system resource as Screen, windows and access to PUBLIC SCREEN!

Having that sorted out I believe that you could apply for the bounty looking at it's current feature request.

Maybe the first thing would be trying to locate the code responsible for clipboard functions in AROS and uUAE.

Exciting things are afoot! ; )
