Re: WmWaros on Qemu

As I don't want to register on too many forums, I explain here how to proceed to convert vmdk image to qcow2 image. If someone can make a link in other forums, he will be welcome.

All is done on a Debian etch.

As some of you know, Qemu doesn't support multiple files vmdk.

First, I followed part of this guide:

Switching From VMWare To VirtualBox: .vmdk To .vdi Using Qemu + VdiTool

VirtualBox, Xen and KVM are based on Qemu, so this works for all of them.

in summary:

- You must download VMWare Server from vmware website.

http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmserver/VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz

- extract vmware-vdiskmanager:

tar zxvf VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz vmware-server-distrib/bin/vmware-vdiskmanager

- convert multiple files vmdk to flat vmdk (you need at least 4 GB):

vmware-vdiskmanager -r vmwaros-cl1.vmdk -t 2 qaros.vmdk

Normally, Qemu is able to manage directly flat vmdk, but to reduce size and to avoid some potential problems (Murphy's law), I've converted it to qemu native format qcow2 (You need 1 more GB):

./qemu/qemu-img convert -O qcow2 qaros-flat.vmdk qaros.qcow2

Here you can delete qaros.vmdk and qaros-flat.vmdk (and free 4 GB).

Have fun, guys.

Thanks laurentv, I'm sure the people over at AROSWorld will be interested to hear how you did this. Take a look at the long thread here:
http://www.arosworld.org/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=14&thread_id=5
Please note the guide posted there didn't work with all versions of VMWAROS. Thanks again!

VmWaros is a very nice work.

But I like Qemu and KVM too, it's why I've converted the vmdk image to qcow2.

You can find it at:

http://vivierlaurent.free.fr/qaros.qcow2.bz2

I've tested with KVM-70 on intel x86_64 and Q on mac mini G4.
