Well, I do have an Opteron system. Anyone else have an x86_64 based system?

If I remember correctly, the last time I tried to compile in 64-bit mode, the first problem was all the use of varargs. 64-bit mode has a completely different way of handling them that requires the PROPER use of varargs. Most 32-bit proggies use them in a way that just happens to work for 32-bit mode, but isn't technically correct.

Then you have to change the code to support 64-bit contexts and ELF64 format files. At that point you can work on all the instances where the code isn't yet 64-bit clean.

It could be good for emulating legally Amiga programs... IMO it would be quite good to have all AROS builds at the same stage

A 3 year old Samsung G9000, with ATI Radeon 128 graphics card (runs any 16 it video mode fine). It's not installed on the harddisk now, but probably will be in December (when I fit a new harddisk).

DFerg - the point would be that 68K Amiga programs that are Workbench 3 compatable would work under it with minimal changes! For just a laptop running AROS a PC laptop will work fine (I've tried with my work one ).

Executables are cross-compatible from native to hosted for the same CPU.
That is, an executable for aros-linux-i386 runs on aros-pc-i386.

I would love to have AROS on a Laptop. One thing I would would like to say in general. I don't want to have one executable for my laptop and a different one for the desktop. Personally I think that this is where running hosted can be a benifit to AROS. It is my understanding that running in hosted uses the same executiable files as native. I don't think that would work with a 680x0 port. Everything would have to be recompiled to work. Does anyone know if running hosted would work in cases such as this? Would the same executiable running in hosted AROS on a PPC or a 680x0 or an x86 be the same? As crazy as it sounds maybe AROS should go in the direction, if this is the case. It would make it very, very portable as well as get around some (not all) of the driver issues that AROS does and will have. At least for the user.

Once again I have given my 2 cents without being asked. Hope I don't get any change.

Dave

yeah, i forgot about apple machines. it would be nice to have an 680x0
apple running aros.

I do have access to one apple mac, and several Amiga's for
testing/developing on, but i'm not sure where to find the best info
about developing for it. Still, i may have a look at that shortly.

Incidentally, the Mac is a 12MB performa 450 with a SCSI hard disk.

I suppose if MacUAE is available there may be some source to play with
there, and seen as (i believe) Mac OS X isn't available for 680x0
mac's, perhaps we could gain some userbase there....
