Oh i love my pc.....

Spen't all night using a friends pc to download from a torrent, while simoultaneously using my pc to download from your mirror, lo-and-behold, both copies downloaded perfectly. no errors.

I'd love to know why this kept happening! but all sorted, and Aros-Max installing from cd (i'd already partitioned with Aros).

Thanks for all your help!

AwoL

ok, well that was easier than I thought - check back there now

Like I said I'll have to see how my bandwidth shapes up over this week before making this permanent!

EDIT: If it all works out I'll do a multi-part file next time so it can be grabbed in two 70Mb chunks or so ...

EDIT #2: Just downloaded & CRC checked AROS-Max.rar on a seperate PC (with IE 6), and it passed.

Maybe the people maintaining the main site and the mirrors can add some PAR2 files? If you get a corrupted file, you can fix it with a few PAR2 files instead of trying to download it all over again and maybe get ANOTHER corrupted copy.

Use QuickPAR if you are on Windows. In Linux, use parchive 2 command line utilities.

http://www.quickpar.org.uk/
http://parchive.sourceforge.net/

Large files should ALWAYS be accompanied by PAR2 files. One single bad byte can render a 4G file unuseable, but you can easily fix it with a single PAR2 block. Usenet folks have been using it now for the last couple years to save bandwidth. It's time for everyone else to start using it as well.

EDIT: I just created 30% redundancy PAR2 files for the 10/12/2004 AROS-Max RAR archive and jpegs that I got from the bittorrent. This archive passes CRC and unrars to give a valid ISO. If you want to try the PAR2 file, email me for the header and a few blocks. I don't really have anywhere I can post them.

Unfortunately i'm on an internal network that doesn't have appropriate port-forwading for bittorrents - due to one of the machines on the network serving various bits & bobs, which is why i keep trying to download it. One thing i have thought is perhaps Mozilla is messing up the archives, so I'm trying to download it with Bill Gates offering instead.... I'll post again once i know if ive successfully downloaded it!

@T-Bone: Don't suppose you've still got a copy of Winbench anywhere?

Last I checked, the torrent had over 60 seeds and almost no leachers, so it's ideal for leaching right now.

Haven't you tried the torrent download?
It usually downloads at 10-15kB/s.

<homer> Woohoo! </homer>

I did the dirty and used a downloader - it probably killed anyone elses connections, but I'll make up for that by getting another copy available tonight as a mirror. It averaged 26Kbs using 8 connections.

I havn't tried it yet, but it passed the CRC check so should be fine.
