also express card, or what ever it is called is just a type of pci express, i am 99.9% sure that i read that in the specifications. now if only i could find the pcmcia specs...

Expresscard is and external version of PCI-Express (with a USB port), so appratenly if you support PCI-Express then you support Expresscards... and, I understand that PCI-Express looks like PCI to unaware software... so we should have support for them already

"just"? I think Cardbus is getting standard on AROS laptops as the time goes (and PCMCIA is getting outdated, but I don't mean we don't have to support it! Btw I like to read CompactFlash cards on my laptop (I use an adaptor for this), and it's PCMCIA's job afaik, even if my port is a Cardbus one... so it must be backwards compatible)
Cardbus is really useful... so if you say it's "just" an extend to do and if someone could be happy to do it, I must say I would be happy to add some euros to such a bounty, because I would like to use it!

Everyone knew it was impossible. Along came a fool who did not know and he did it.

pccard.library ?

and implement card.resource.

Impossible. There's one major problem with it - it's not aware of multiple slots. card.resource assumes there's only one card.
The thing i am thinking about is a next version of pccard.library capable not only of parsing tuples. The API of new subsystem can be very similar to card.resource, so apps will be very easy to port.
The main difference: in card.resource we have OwnCard() function called on a selfmade CardHandle. This function needs to be extended to support matching callback, like our PCI subsystem have. This would allow the driver to request which cards it wants. All other cards in the system will stay untouched by this driver.
An insertion interrupt should be global, independent on CardHandle. It should occur when a new card matching the given specs is inserted.
ForceRemove() function should also have matching callback.
This subsystem IMHO should be ported to other AmigaOS flavours as well, because it could work not only with machine's builtin hardware but also with PCI adapter cards.

Something different might be necessary for CardBus of course. Maybe it would be better to support it through the PCI layer.

well i thought type I was only memory cards. I dont really think that type I is all that important right now, but it should be done, at least down the road. I would rather be able to browse the net than add more memory. though a bit more would be nice. wonder if i can put more into this thing *google*

IIRC, version 2 of the PCMCIA/PCCard standard may have introduced support for non-memory cards, but this is nothing to do with the type. Type III cards do take up two slots, but they can be 16 bit or 32 bit.

cardbus is in fact backward compatible. ncafferkey, i may be wrong, but i am pretty sure that I was only a memory upgrade, hence what pcmcia originally stood for (and i guess still does). i thought that 2 and 3 were different in more than just thickness. doesnt 3 take 2 slots and isnt it 32 bit?

Well i could change priorities if someone makes a donation. It's not quite hard to do i think. I need PCMCIA myself since my machine has no builtin network card and even no CD-ROM. I have a 3com PCMCIA network card and a PCMCIA SCSI adapter. I'd like to be able to use them both.
The only problem - i can't support CardBus because my laptop has only Type2 sockets.

P.S. I've investigated the question more. Yes, CardBus is a PCI, but Type2 is not a PCI. I think CardBus has some kind of Type2 compatibility mode.

Type I/II/III only refers to the card thickness. It's better to refer to non-CardBus cards as 16 bit.

I've already written a PCMCIA support library for AmigaOS. I think it would be good to port it to AROS and implement card.resource. We would then have drivers for 3Com and Prism II network cards straight away. I also had some ideas for how to support multiple slots through the existing card.resource API.

Something different might be necessary for CardBus of course. Maybe it would be better to support it through the PCI layer.

well as far as i know there isnt even a bounty written. like i said, i would be willing to donate some $$. but you say you dont have cardbus on your laptop? not sure how well that would help anyone even though it is backwards compatible, i dont think you can buy type2 devices any more.
