I recently posted to the Team AROS list, proposing a reduced/Phase-I bounty for a new HD installer (bounty no. 6). The reason for this is that I'm interested in making a better installer for AROS, but some of the requirements for the bounty would be too much work for me at the moment.

People on the list seemed fairly happy with the revised bounty. However, it hasn't been discussed yet whether the revised bounty is enough for the full amount or if some money should be kept back for a Phase II bounty.

I'm proposing the following differences in the bounty:

- It wouldn't be a completely new installer, it would be an improved version of the current installer and the other tools it uses.

That would be nice - theres a lot of areas it can be improved ..

- It would only autodetect Windows, and would set up GRUB to multiboot Windows and AROS. It wouldn't do this for Linux or other OSs, but it wouldn't overwrite their partitions of course (unless wiping the disk is requested by the user).

yeah its easy enough to boot windows in grub, would be nice to automate it .. however ..

- No GUI boot menu editor.

So if it probes it wrong we cant correct it without manual intervention after the install? not sure if thats a good idea ..

At the least it could show the menu options it is going to install and let the user delete/modify them

- Options to create either one partition, or separate System and Work partitions. Partition sizes can be typed in, or the user can ask to use all available space.

Yeah thats how i had it before but without size input - you had to do it in hdtoolbox manually if u wanted custom sizes however c:partition is a bit flaky and needs a lot of love

- Probably no fully manual partitioning. However, perhaps HDToolbox could be started from the installer to fill this role if it can be made reasonably reliable.

The option was there to launch a replacement for hdtoolbox (quickpart - a more graphcical like partitioning tool ala partition magic - but incomplete) and could just as easily give that option instead... however i think it is for a user to decide if they want to manually partition or go with defaults not the app coder so im in favour of having the option there.

- No volume manager.

From my experience - id like to know how youd identify what drives etc are in a system, which is the boot drive etc?

I spent quite a while trying to figure out a sane way to do it in AROS but could find none without using manually interevention or dirty/illegal probing.

Because of this the only reasonable solution (imo) was to define a volume manager like subsystem and have aros drivers register with it - poviding a nice api for app developers to gain a bit more info on what is available and how it all ties together.

Without it I dont see how you can identify the appropriate resources for partitioning/probing for other os's/installing grub.

- All other requirements listed on the bounty's web page would be met.

A fixed partition.library isn't mentioned in the requirements, but I think it's expected. I intend to improve the current library until a large majority of users consider it reliable. I'm currently working on adding logical partition support to it. Logical partitions would be supported by the installer too.

The fixed partition library is the only grey area since theres no clear indication on where exactly the problems come from. However ofc it would be real nice to have it fixed ;p

It'll support SFS, but not for the boot partition. This is assuming the handler and necessary tools are present.

Yes, you'll be able to either wipe the disk, or use remaining space. In either case, you'll be able to choose to specify partition size, or to use all available space (where available space is either the whole disk or the space not used by other partitions). BTW, one limitation will be that the two AROS partitions will be in an RDB partition, so they'll have to be contiguous, ie. you won't be able to fill two separate gaps on your HD.

I suppose this would gain some new users. Old amigausers now running windows who just want to try this out. And once bitten they just cant help themselves and just starts helping out with money and coding:)

This along with a new distro and a note on OSnews/AmigaWorld.net and some new developers might find a new challenge. By then there might be a fat and ntfs handler as well for easy filetransfer from windows partitions.

Sounds like a good "first step" to me. I say go for it.

Now I think this is a good idea =) It also matches what I'd want as I said on the teamaros mailinglist.
