What do you mean with "when necessary" here? How can such translator know what type of data is accessed by the m68k translated code?

Since asm code provides no type info, such emulator is not feasible (no, 32-bit access does not necesary mean that the data is 32-bit long). Have a look here:

http://moobunny.dreamhosters.com/cgi/mbmessage.pl/amiga/126017.shtml

m68k emulator would be feasible if we would emulate BigEndian behaviour of x86 itself.

I'm not sure if you are aware of the fact that amigae has been written entirely in assembler, and is based on os1.3 features (maybe except for some enhancements i have introduced later) - porting it to aros would imply re-writing the entire source code from scratch

btw, a silly question (perhaps):
is there anything that pulls you from writing a small interpreter for 68k code that would run 68k programs in aros-hosted environment? i am not very deep in the ideology, but interpreting commands and creating virtual environment for such programs should not be a big deal... the only real issue is calling lib functions - in theory aros native libs would require 68k wrappers to put proper args back to stack, wouldn't these?

if every 68k code was called through the translation engine that would (when necessary) flip endianess and keep track of local registers, plus emulated the code - then virtually any library, hook or cross-platform function call could work, no matter if 68k code was calling aros native or vice versa; same for 68k code calling 68k code (as the wrapper could virtually handle such elements).

I am not saying here that you should turn AROS to be another Amithlon, it is not my point. however, i am aware that there is a variety of software "no longer developped" (like directory opus, certain mui classes, whatever comes to mind) - how do you think guys?

It would be nice if it came to AROS. I asked the original author, Wouter van Oortmerssen last year about porting it to AROS, but he was not interested.

Maybe this will help.

Heey i have some good news

I've been mailing with Chris Handley for some time now, seems he finally decided to give his software a try. Have a look:

AmigaWorld - PortablE

i think this could be a major step forward for E fans :)

Cheers!
