Most of the above, your preaching to the choir. More coders or doc/translators are always needed. Community supporting TeamAROS is a very good thing and has generated results.

What is also needed is to financially support AROS related products (hardware and software) which in turn will bring more AROS related products because there is money to be made. If the community has deemed AROS should be a viable OS, work and or money needs to be flowing in to build AROS. I certainly do not blame software publishers in being leary on doing AROS ports of their Amiga titles, they do not see evidence of AROS being a viable commercial project. Having the few commercial products out there bought, would get their attention that their product would be reasonable commercial risk.

Don't me get wrong an AmigaOS base is a nice place to start from. When I say modern I don't mean like Windows, Linux or any other. The world certainly doesn't need another bloated or over complicated OS.

However, it still seems to me that there needs to be a better vision of the future - something that'll make people take it seriously as an OS now not just as some kind of retro-computing artifact.

Perhaps this is a marketing thing more than anything else. AmigaOS should be just one component of the "vision". Perhaps people would be better sold by a description like this:

* A lightweight OS, low on requirements high on speed
* User friendly interface
* A modern object oriented API
* Stable and secure OS
* Incorporates the strengths of its Amiga heritige

Having something like that as your goal working from an AmigaOS base would be good. AROS needs to sell itself more as a future facing OS. Doing that I feel may drum up more interest and involvement.

Getting across the fact that AmigaOS compatiblity is a stepping stone to something more seems like a good idea to me.

Am I making sense?

P.S. Congratulations to everyone who has worked on and supported the OS, it's shaping up nicely.

I cannot agree enough with JLF65. I installed AROS native on an old 233Mhz machine and, even though there's still a good deal that needs to be done, I couldn't believe how quickly it responded.

Given how poorly Windows XP runs for many people, I don't think so-called "modern" OSes are all that hot to begin with. AmigaOS 3.x was and still is superior to any version of Windows. It lacks one or two features like virtual memory, but makes up for it in other areas, like speed and efficiency. Windows "multi-tasking" is a joke, even on high-end systems. My Opteron workstation running XP can't multitask nearly as good as AROS on a 500MHz Celeron.

I would prefer to see AROS stay "lean and mean". All it really needs is more hardware support and internet access. I prefer an OS that can be installed off a couple floppies to one needing a double-sided DVD.

Until AROS catches up to AOS, it's going to be mostly of yesteryear with a very solid base of coding supporting it. Once the basics are caught up to 3.x level, then I think your going to see where AROS can move to modern OS level. Big difficulty for the AROS coders is playing catchup while keeping an eye on the future so they don't box themselves in.

i have this question once, but erverything should start somewhere, and amiga was really after it time...have a small modular oop enviroment root is something that we could look for a nice future!

This post isn't meant to be be flamebait, but just an honest question.

To me, and I guess probably others too, AROS seems to be backward looking. AmigaOS compatability is all very groovy, but how is AROS going to develop from there? What's going to make people feel like this is an OS of the future and not of yesteryear?

This is not meant to be a criticism but I think people need to see that AROS can stand as an OS in it's own right rather than just on it's Amigan heritage.

What are people's thoughts on this?
