I forgot that it does this under ABI_v1 as well!
Yes, so i need to pull my finger out and work out why my environment is so unstable. That's kind of a blocker on anything and everything at the moment. I have VMWare and a USB-C HDD at the ready, I just need time now.

i could guide you a bit through what i have discovered if i still remember it. it would anyway need to be fixed in abi v1 first, then backpoted. at least i can indicate some places where bad things happen. unfortunately my attempts if fixing the endian macros have not succeeded, im not sure why. then i have given up on that.

<p>It is my intention to setup an ABI_v0 build environment so that I can backport the keyboard map that I did to it but right now I still have real problems with hosted full stop so I need to cure those issues first.</p><p>Once I've got a usable environment I can look into debugging it myself. Having looked through the code for the input prefs, I'd say t looks manageable and might be a task I could cope with. Right now life is also getting in the way as well however!</p>
<p>[EDIT] Oh, PS: Thank you for still looking into it even!</p>

There is a number of unfixed issues with more detailed Wanderer prefs. Particularly endian Problems with Reading some entries. I kniw a Part of Locations but i didnt come uo with a proper fixes. Your issue would haveprobably have to be debugged in depth, as it cant just be an endian One.

I finally discovered the root cause: there's something Wanderer prefs program does not like in Icaros settings. In order to fix the issue, just move global.prefs from envarc:sys/Wanderer to a safe location and restart Icaros. Wanderer will be 'reset' but, at least, you will be able to set your preferences for desktop and windows as you wish. I could reproduce the issue taking the default global.prefs from current nightly build and, option by option, replace all default settings with the Icaros ones. In the end, I was not able to switch icons only/all files anymore without triggering the system error. I have not isolated the culprit option, though. I noticed that default Icaros options saved a 820k global.prefs file, while nightly builds one is 915k big. My guess is that enabling some option 'trunkates' this file to a lesser size and, once saved and loaded at startup, Wanderer prefs file cannot handle it correctly anymore.

Just to say that something committed this week has resolved this issue under ABI_v1.
Not much help for Icaros at this point I know unless it was a specific code change that could be back-ported. I haven't looked into that yet. [EDIT] Just to clarify - by 'this issue' I mean the one where I get a crash when I click 'Use' in Wanderer prefs.

Since this is might be a bug, please use the included preferences as a work-around. Unzip it env:sys to test and envarc:sys to save. Attach file: Link only for registered users

It can certainly be a double edged sword, since things like smb aren't up to date, and therefore can cause problems in windows domains and such - and as you said it doesn't force you to adapt to changes in the newer Linux environments (such as using gcc 7 to compile host code), but for me its easy to quickly get an environment up and running to develop AROS under.

I'll take it offline and do some work to try to determine whats going on. Including trying out debugging. That will be an interesting and worthwile exercise in itself!
Clearly as you've both said there's a few relatively straightforward things I can do to see if it's an oddity with my system: 1) download nightly binaries to rule out my manual build, 2) build a Centos 7 VM and try again there. I also have no problem whatsoever with changing my host to some other flavour if at the end of the day I determine that to be the issue. I'd prefer to put some work in rather than go to older versions and I have to say I prefer to stay away from Centos, purely because we used it for years in production and it gave me a lot of headaches, but that was for reasons that have no bearing here and were mostly Microsoft's doing.
