Ooooook, I decided to give VICE sources a go. I extracted them on a Icaros 2.2.2 installation (the development chain is exactly the same as the one of v2.2.1) and looked in the history of the program. Since - you know - I AM NOT A DEVELOPER AT ALL, I tried to understand what's new after release 2.4 and to see if something can be related to the slowness issue. I noticed that "(no audio)" emulators are not affected by the issue, and I maybe misconcluded that something about SID emulation might be the root cause.
So I opened the AROS shell, called a bash with sh, and entered the command configure --without-resid After some time, I got this report: Quote:
Problem is that make won't work. If I launch it from bash, I get a "insert this: volume" request at every single step. If I run it from the AROS CLI, it gests immediately stuck. I am sure a better solution would be compiling it using a cross compiler on Linux. But please remember the capital letters above.

Question: is this a new, custom compile, or is it just the .lzx package I mentioned before, repackaged as tar.gz? I need to fix the slowness issue to include a new version of VICE in Icaros Desktop, or it would be completely pointless.

Hello, I've tried downloading this one

http://archives.aros-exec.org/?function=showfile&file=emulation/computer/vice-3-1.i386-aros.tar.gz

However, when I try to unpack it, no matter the platform and the compressing software I use, I get a EOF mismatch error at the end of the TAR archive.

So I got a .lzx version, already compiled for AROS x86, at this address:

http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/crossplatform/emulators/VICE/

The problem is, however, that the x64 emulator (x64 means the C64 emulator for i386, NOT anything 64-bit related), and not only that one, is painfully slow. I get decent speeds only byrunning the (nosound) version, which obviously cuts down the emulation experience.

The questions, in the end, are:

1) are the two versions of VICE 3.1 any different? Or is the first one just a tgz repack of the lzx one?

2) is there any volounteer who could download VICE 3.1 source files, and try to build it on current AROS? Maybe the slowness of the official release can be fixed using a different build environment.

Thank you so much
