Please, dont confuse system builders/distributors/sponsors with the developers.

I think there are more ways to give recognition than the name of a hardware driver. It can be included in the comments of the source code, in the version string, in the commit messages, ...
And I would find it bad practice if people would remove these statements.

I don't think you need a specific naming convention for hardware drivers to be able to build a brand name.

Staf.

That is not a "good compromise" at all - its ignoring what has been said and adding more confusion for users (who already struggle with such things..)

I really dont care about "distributors" renaming things for the sake of it (or to appease their own ego's..)

As staf said - drivers should be named to reflect the hardware they support (period). Anything else, in the long run, is confusing to developers AND end users.

2. for now, there's no marketing strategy between the 'geforce7800.hidd' and the 'iMica.device' files: simply, they are older releases than the current ones of nvidia.hidd and (I-dont-remmeber).device that work better on specific hardware (my GeForce 7800 and steve's iMica system).

Then you should append the specific version to the name not start renaming them willy nilly to suit your distribution/platform.

Personally imho it would have been better to append the specific version to the name.

3. I don't personally like the idea of personalized device names, however, if someone PAYS to get a driver and won't release it as open source, he has all the right to name the file however he wants. Official AROS wouldn't include it for license issues, Icaros will if the author agrees.

Because obviously naming them in the respective softwares documentation isnt enough (perhaps i should make my own KalamateeWanderer ..)

I thought this may be contentious.

If future developers see there work just used without recognition then they will either not invest or close drivers up.

This is not an issue for now because frankly nobody is buying hardware, but it may well crop up in the future, especially if Aros starts to grow after v1 milestone.

Perhaps a way round would be a folder with say public_iMica drivers and public_Ares_Drivers etc. Then all can share and sponsor/investers get recognised.

I want iMica to become a brand success, if in a very limited market with Amiga and Aros. To do that people need to see that we are contributing to the Aros story. I am sure the same will be true with AresOne.
