How does radeon.hidd compare to nvidia.hidd now? Feature-wise I mean.

Both support hardware cursor with transparency and both use whole video memory for bitmaps. At the very moment nvidia renders monochrome text with acceleration and radeon doesn't (it will within few days, I promise).

The nvidia chip has both blitter (for accelerated blits between any two bitmaps within card's video memory) and the stretch engine. Stretch engine can blit between truecolor bitmaps with different depth (that is, it may for example blit 16bpp bitmap onto 15bpp, 16bpp or 32bpp bitmap). I have not find such feature in radeon - that is it may blit only between bitmaps of the same depth.

Apart from this few differences, both drivers can do the same. Some addons could be done (like overlay support) in case of both, we only lack proper API in our gfx hidds.

PS. Comparing to my old nvidia PCI card, the radeon driver is damn fast. I will have to check it with my GeForce 6150 IGP on the new machine ;).

Once I will have some spare time, I will change video memory allocation routines and will introduce support for garbage collector - least used bitmaps will be moved from VRAM to normal memory, and the bitmaps will be shifted in video ram in order to reduce the memory fragmentation. But these are long-term TODO's.

Nope. Rage belongs to different family of ATI chips and has to be programmed in different way. Moreover, due to lack of hardware, I am unable to add support for this family.

For this reason the driver's name is "radeon.hidd"

Wow, that's cool. Anyone tried it yet? The accelerated one, I mean.

It appears Michal has submitted his first test accelerated Radeon driver to the AROS SVN.

I see Michal has submitted the unaccelerated beta level driver to the AROS SVN. Nice work Michal!
