Putting them on the disk instead of in the kernel would also allow the use of GPL code in video drivers. Right now, you can't have any GPL code as the GPL and APL are incompatible.
They'd have to go in contribs, but you would at least have them. Otherwise you are stuck waiting for someone to rewrite the driver from scratch to avoid the GPL.

It would be nice if AROS instead of having the gfx hidds in ROM, could/would load them as needed from disk.
Hopefully one day we will support a number of 2d chipsets, so having them al l in rom doesnt seem right (other os's manage to load them as needed fine)
