Yes wanderer has improved quite a bit recently, and scalos is there for AROS ABIv1-i386pc trials. Who knows how the magellan bounty will fare?

If you want the current version of ambient, you'll have to talk to the authors and see what they require for getting access the current source tree and then have those sources examined for what's broken in zune or missing in AROS from making a working ambient for AROS.

Personally I'd rather see AROS move in its own direction than in cloning everything morphos, good as that may be.

Sincerely speaking, I am a "the more, the better" guy: Ambient is a great file manager and it has a modern look and many interesting features, so I'd be really glad to see it ported to AROS. But now that Wanderer has been enhanced by the papercuts initiative, I feel this a less urgent task and just a "something more" we may be happy with, but nothing urgent and vital as it might have been before.

Ambient is nice and but we need to drive one way not 5 ways like some of you already said

when we have Wanderer
DpousMeg2(on the way)
Scalos (done thanks to mazze)

why do we need Ambient? or drop them 3 and go for just Ambient..

I think we look good with Wanderer/Scalos/DupusMag2 combination and dont need Ambient...

the same idea came from someone on amigaworld. As some there mentioned is Ambient tightly connected to morphos-components so it is not possible to easily port it (even if Zune will be updated).

Note that Janus-UAE is also under the GPL and is well-integrated in AROS.

Janus-UAE is not integrated into AROS. Wanderer has some 10 additional lines of source code for Janus-UAE. Other than that, Janus-UAE lives in his own svn on sourceforge.net.

Not that it matters (in this discussion or at all), but I just wanted to correct this information.

Of course, Janus-UAE could be directly integrated into AROS, if there is a need or wish to do so. But contrib is full enough already and as Janus-UAE only works for i386 anyways, being an own project seems to be the right thing in my eyes.

Feel free to try getting it ported if you like, but Id be surprised if any of the regular devs. show much interest for now. With Scalos well and truly on the way, the sources to Dopus Mag2 currently in thier own bounty, plus work on Wanderer continuing we've already hit a saturation point amongst established aros developers.

We've talked many times about this, but every tie we stumble upon these issues:

1. a practical one: Ambient needs more advanced MUI functions than Zune provides ---> we should update Zune first and nobody ssems interested in doing that

It would benefit AROS to have improved MUI functionality in Zune along the lines of MorphOS.

Quote:
2. a licensing one: Ambient has been released under the terms of the GPL, which is incompatible with the APL. Since Ambient would be an important part of the OS, it wouldn't be nice. ---> Ambient should be released under the APL, or AROS under the GPL, and both them are unlikely to happen

(notice: this wouldn't prevent me or other distributors to add Ambient to AROS)

3. a political one: and what should we do with Wanderer? What should people that are working on it do? Forget everything? naaaah... ;)

Wanderer could stay as a default front-end under the APL, while Ambient could (as mentioned above) be an add-on in a distro without violating the GPL or APL. Note that Janus-UAE is also under the GPL and is well-integrated in AROS. I don't see how points 2 and 3 are really an issue, given that Wanderer fills the role as AROS default desktop under its own license (leaving motivation to continue work on Wanderer), and Ambient could work as an add-on in terms of licensing and politics. The first technical hurdle seems more important.

I would also like to see Ambient as an option for an AROS desktop, and improving Zune to support Ambient is likely to be fruitful. AROS needs to catch up with MorphOS in many areas, and has the advantage of being open-source and runnable on x86, ARM, 68k/UAE, etc. So I think this would be a worthwhile bounty.
