That'd run an old or stripped copy of Linux no probs, and hosted ontop of that. Red Hat 5.1 used to work for me fine on a 200MHz P1 with 64Mb, Slackware 1 worked fine on a 486sx with 4Mb of ram ... but thats another story ...

Sounds like my NeoMagic chipset on my laptop. Never booted, probably never will. Pity, 233MHz laptop is not too good for Linux nor XP, just too slow and limited in ram (128MB).

When adding the RDB partition on an i815 chipset machine I had to disable it, but it went fine from then on (!)
This old kernel being used, is it from the 'Snapshot' version? if so that still has the old ide.device rather than ata.device, so has no DMA!

I had this problem, and someone told me to turn DMA off in the GRUB loader.. I really feel (though can't prove it technically yet) that there are problems with some IDE controllers.. I am still attempting to prove it..

Well, I emplaced the kernel from AROS-Max 2004-10-21, and, er... Quote:

Sounds like you've got some pretty wierd stuff going on there, I'd copy it over a chunk at a time anyway, after using the installer to just put on the essentials.
The installer is a work in progress, but once you've got everything on it /should/ work pretty reliably

Hmm... Well, right now, I've just asked copy to very kindly "ALL TO DH0:", after booting off DH0, so we'll see how it goes. I think it's in extras\gfx\XaoS right now. Started the copy process half an hour ago. Wee!
Although I must say, I'm a bit miffed that AROS-MAX isn't absolutely perfect (  )............... Oh crud. It crashed on \extras\gs813\examples\vasarely.ps. But, on the positive side, it found the CD to be a preferable boot device and, well, booted off of the CD. :quoi: .............. Okay, started the installer. I must say, it's rather pushy. I deselected "Show Partitioning Options ...." and "Format Partitions" and it claimed I hadn't. *grumble* I suppose it's just some generic text, but it could definitely lead to panicking. ..............
