In my opinion this bounty could be a great chance to have most of the required Linux/UNIX porting requirements finally implemented for AROS. This is very necessary to have a point where a community can start off with known and proven tools to develop their own AROS world.
So I also suggest to break this bounty down to implement POSIX features like signaling and pthread like mentioned by craid-hjb before. But I do not think it is necessary to deliver the whole bunch of GNU tools in this case. Just implement the "future proof" missing features mentioned above and the core of the tools that are essentially required to build AROS natively. I guess the rest of the tools will be ported faster than one may expect after the core requirements for porting were made available. Manu

GCC and related tools are already available for AROS.
As for whether I would prefer a custom solution: it's not up to me, but rather up to whoever choses to take up on the bounty. What's the aim of the bounty, to have AROS self-compile, or to port all those tools to AROS? That needs to be decided first. If the aim is to make it possible to compile AROS within itself, then whichever means to achieve that is good.

That actually is the reason of this thread, to discuss the path to go, since someone who is new to AROS does not know about pros and cons of a certain path. e.g. adding signaling to our clib instead of porting the static clib2. The whole process and the source tree is dependent on the AROS build system which is based upon those tools, the build system itself may not be perfect but it surely makes things easier and concise. Would you prefer a completely new custom solution? May I add that GCC can be seen as "one of those tools" aswell..
