The complete installation also installs AISS which requires unpacking 3000+ little files, and then copying them to another destination (IIRC), this makes AROS look stuck like it happened in the pre-zunzip era. Quote:
Unluckily I don't own the right hardware to make some testing on every hidd. If unwanted behavior of radeon.hidd is confirmed by other people, I will consider placing it in storage. But please be sure about that. Quote:
I have included in Icaros Desktop the make command I found on Aminet, which I was reported is better on amigalike systems. I will restore the one coming with AROS with the next update (and place the current one in Storage) for 2.2.1.

@Mangonuts
Have you tried disabling unnecessary drivers, e.g. AHCI, USB, audio? Also, knowing the exact systems you have might help us.

Luckily I did not have any of the issues mentioned, but I did have a problem during the post install phase. At first I tried the complete installation and ZUnZip seemed to get stuck after a few minutes. But later I chose the standard installation instead, and the install script finished okay.
On my x300 desktop, Icaros still boots into a broken workbench with no icons. If there is a problem with the Radeon driver, perhaps the radeon.hidd could possibly be moved into storage. Then my Radeon system would have booted Icaros in a working Vesa mode. I Also noticed that the make command did not seem to work correctly. Configure seems to be okay, but then make does not seem to recognize the makefile. I replaced Development/bin/make with another version and it worked fine after that. On the plus side, the new text buttons are a pleasure to use, since I am not a regular Magellan user and am not familiar with the icons. And also the Linux hosted install worked the very first time. Nice surprise. Thanks ![]()

Thanks for this! Quote:
This depends on your window manager. In KDE it's possible to set window attributes for specific programs (eg, open fullscreen on desktop 2, screen 1), but other DE's may not be so flexible. It may also be possible to run it from the command line with a fullscreen parameter.

OK I found an Intel Pro 100 NIC in my collection and now I have some useful test results. There seem to be two problems:
1) Instability with Realtek 8139 and 8168 cards. Using either card the system would lock up almost immediately after loading the driver and inserting the LAN cable. Booting with network enabled would freeze as soon as the desktop appears. Sometimes the system would not lock up immediately and was usable for a while but then it would often freeze at a later time. I suspect it was happening during network activity like web browsing. I'm using the Intel Pro 100 card now and so far everything is peachy. The above results were much the same on both 2.2 and the latest ABIv0 nightly and on two different PCs. 2) Saving Network prefs in 2.2 can crash the OS Not sure if this relates to the above, but even with the good NIC Icaros is crashing on saving network prefs. On crashing all mounted volumes seem to disappear and soon after nothing responds, then the system needs to be rebooted. I didn't get this problem with the nightly but would have to test more to be sure. One of the two systems is my dedicated AROS-friendly desktop running 2.1.3 so these appear to be new issues. I'll log a bug report for the first one.

Now that's really curious. Did networking work on this hardware with the previous verison of Icaros? Stupid question; you mentioned its asking for sys: and env: before the crash - hav you confirmed these are being correctly set up during startup? Cheers, Nigel.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried with the most recent ABIv0 nightly and got the same behavior, so I'm sure it's not the download. Also, replacing the NIC drivers with the ones from 2.1.3 (which used to work) still crashed the same way.
I'll try a different family of card if I can find a compatible one, and also removing devices from the network just in case.

Working for me native using the 8169 driver. Again, if this is happening on two different machines it couls be an issue with the download - maybe, as mentioned above, trying a new download/DVD burn? Have you tried starting networking after booting from DVD? Cheers, Nigel.

These should work: - The "ShutDown" shell command (a custom menu item could be added to Magellan to call this). - Wanderer's main menu -> Shut down... -> Power Off.
