Hi ken74,

Quote:

I don't think you want to see my italian as well

I get as far as si, no and comprende :ducks:

Quote:

Yes, i understood.

Quote:

That's perfect

But a question remains: Are you able to boot the Icaros CD-Rom ?

Quote:

Well, i warned upfront that google would mess things up... eventually it always does :-S.

You can ask user Amiga, as we ran into that google translate problem several times in the past

Take for instance:
Quote:

ciao grazie

Which google translates into:
Quote:

hello thanks

I have not taken a single lesson Italian, nor have i ever spoken/wrote Italian, but it is a Latin based language after all.

Even i am able to comprehend that "Ciao" can either mean "hello" or "goodbye" and that "grazie" means "Thank you very much" or literally "many thanks".

Place it into context and you get "Bye Bye and thank you very much", which reads a whole lot more friendly

Automated computer translation simply sucks, even today.

regards,

Did you mean that you were able to boot the Icaros CD-Rom correctly (inserted in the internal CD-Rom drive) when you disabled the external USB DVD-Rom drive ?

Ok.

Please be aware of any (hidden) system recovery partitions from the manufacturer.

It can't hurt to make a backup of your existing windows XP Master Boot Record (MBR).

In case you succeed in booting the Icaros Light CD-Rom and proceed with installing Icaros then please read the Icaros manual very carefully and select the correct options during installation.

You do not want to end up with Windows XP being replaced with AROS

Google translated that for me into this:
Quote:

you have two cdrom / dvdrom drive one internal and one usb
but when I tried to boot from ide to usb disabled I have no problems

Now, the first sentence i could translate myself (more correctly) from my understanding of the italian language:

Quote:

Yes, i have 2 drives. One being a CD-Rom drive (internal) and one being a DVD-Drive (external USB).

But the second sentence, translated by google, confuses me a little :-S

Quote:

but when I tried to boot from ide to usb disabled I have no problems

That _might_ perhaps be a problem for AROS. Unfortunately i am not 100% sure about that.

Okidoki, no problemo

Then we continue our attempts to figure out what's wrong exactly

Also, when you have USB 1.1: amiga's suggestion of using a pendrive might perhaps be an option for you.

Quote:

Yes, i have that problem here as well

Quote:

Oh. Yes, please try that first.

Icaros Light was especially created for those that do not have DVD and only a CD-Rom. It should fit on a CD-Rom perfectly

Be sure to choose a burning speed that is low, so that the burned result is of better quality. I remember having to use writing speeds of 1x or at the most 2x normal writing speed. The lower the writing speed, the better the burned result.

Ok, no problem.

In that case: Am i correct that you want to replace your existing OS (windows XP) with AROS ?

Something went wrong with google translate, so i ask to verify.

Are you telling that you have 2 cd-rom drives ? One internal (IDE) drive and one external cd-rom drive attached to USB ?

That _might_ perhaps be a problem for AROS. Unfortunately i am not 100% sure about that.

Quote:

con icaros non carica il grub

I understand. As i wrote above : we keep continue to search for the problem

Quote:

when booting from floppy then it would be possible to install icaros of hd?

Yes.

The whole purpose of the floppy disk image on the nightly download page is to assist those having problems booting from CD-Rom.

Because a floppy disk can always be booted, the AROS boot process is loaded from this floppy. AROS can then try to detect your cd-rom and continue the boot from CD-Rom.

But, i would advice to use a CD-Rom first (instead of DVD-Rom) and if we cannot figure out how to make it work: use amiga's solution using a pendrive (that is if you have a spare one around).

Just for the record: If the machine would not be able to boot from the CD-Rom drive, that also means the machine is not capable of booting from a pendrive.

Although i do not seem to be able to verify with a trustworthy source: computers with (only) USB 1.0 did not had support for booting from any USB device what-so-ever.

That could be verified pretty easy by inserting a bootable CD-Rom (that is known to work, preferably tested on another computer first) and trying to boot that from the machine that failed earlier with AROS.

it does not matter what CD-Rom, as long as it is a live distro (forget about AROS for this particular test ) or even a Windows installation CD-Rom.

It is best to test booting with a 'normal' CD-Rom that is bootable and _not_ one that is burned. Only if you are 100% sure that a burned CD-Rom boots from another computer you might want to use that (and using the same CD-Rom drive, as there are differences in drives).
