I can vouch for this, on Atom boards (iMica) VirtualBox is unusably slow,

I completely understand the problems you face transferring. However, try VirtualBox and see what you think, I can only really comment from Windows point of view, but it gives a really good experience and is a great way for a new Aros user to try before committing to hardware.

However, I am slightly biased because I had problems with VmWare originally and I did not want to pay the license fee if there was no sound. Then I found VirtualBox which solved all problems.

Perhaps people could comment on VirtualBox and Linux and if sound and network both work there as well.

Phonom X2 550 3.1 Ghz- Thumbs up for VirtualBox
Centrino 1.86 Ghz - VirtualBox is unusable while VMPlayer is good enough

I use VMware 'cos my AROS build machine is a virtual one from VMware. I am considering virtual box since too much people says it is better, but my old Fedora 8 installation must be corectly imported and handled by virtualbox, before I can use it also for Icaros VE.

I'm using virtualbox under linux (ubuntu) for pro reasons, it 's working really great. I tried vmware too, but I prefer virtualbox.

Without wanting to start up a war on virtual machine choices. Is there a specific reason for sticking with VMWare that I am unaware of if sound is not supported. I know I have mentioned this before but VirtualBox runs really well and is totally free. Sound AC97, network and performance. I do understand that people have setups to move if they change.

Not tested in Linux yet however but I will shortly.

I've contacted two different coders about this driver in past times, one being Ross. Unluckily too much months has lasted since then, and I don't remember exactly whom answered to me that he felt "not ready to release that code under a open source license", I imagine because he spent much time coding it and didn't want to loose the paternity on that. He also said he would have given a peek and maybe port it to AROS, but unluckily nothing happened.

Thanks, anyway, for having respawned this topic: maybe today, with more developers available, someone would be so kind to take this job.

Thanks for the link. I've just sent an email to Ross Vumbaca asking for his collaboration, or at least for permission to make the port (this will mean that I will ask someone here to get the sources and do the port, keeping the driver closed source: it's better than having nothing).

I'll keep you informed.

Digging Up a VERY old thread....

did he ever reply to your e-mail ?

Since I managed to get Icaros installed on my VMplayer and updated to the latest version I was thinking its a Shame there is no sound in VMware...

Doesn't Amithlon support the Soundblaster 128 series (ES1370, ES1371 and CT5880 chipsets) via AHI? Perhaps Bernie can make the source available for the driver if it isn't entangled by legal issues.
