See the "Thoughts on APM -" thread for my ideas on the package manager and packages.

I can see a need for both the package manager and the installer. Most programs will only need the package manager. They will simply install. No need to bug the user for anything. However, I can see that some programs may need a more interactive installation and need to use the installer.

So I think we'll see nearly everything in package format in repositories, and the occasional program which uses the installer. I think using the installer should be discouraged in favor of packages. The more packages, the easier it is on the user. Installer scripts are usually a big pain in the butt. Much of the time, all you do is select novice and let it do everything. That's the same as a package. Even when you select intermediate or expert, you usually just wind up letting it install however it wants to anyway, just the same as novice. Programs like that should be a package. The installer should only be used when it's really needed because you MUST have user input.

well, i really cant imagine why and when use the installer instead of your packages script! =o/
(it would be clean enought, the only bad side is a bloated assigned enviroment, maybe)

Provide a unified interface for applications that require configuration during installation.

At the least it should copy some files.

Well, yes, of course.

Theyre jobs are quite different and specific. Trying to merge them into one super app is counter "amiga/aros" imo, and just bad.

The "Package Manager" should launch the "Installer" as necessary.

or something like this! any comments?

I think your thoughts on what installer/package manager does are a bit short sighted in some respects. in an ideal world it would be great to say install and its done but that juts isnt possible, and to pretend it would be is, well, silly =/

If we had a Package Manager (under the prefs drawer), that manage the prefs/env-arch/sys/packages files would we still need a installer?

my first ideia on a package manager would be something like:
Package Name
Package Path
ADD | Edit | Remove
Enable(on)(Package-Startup)|Disable(off)(Package-Shutdown)

or something like this! any comments?
