First update to Icaros Desktop 2.2 is now available on Icaros website! This is a bugfix release which does not add new features or programs to the distribution, but it refreshes AROS system files and corrects many bugs reported here on AROS-EXEC (and elsewhere...).
These include: - removed duplicated FinalWriter demo from Utilities - removed duplicated MESA demos from Extras/Demos - removed other duplicated files here and there - replaced make with AROS one, now it should find makefiles as expected - Aminet's version of make moved to Storage - replaced ata.device with better working one - replaced most AROS system files with newer components - added alternative ATA device to advanced boot options - removed faulty rtl8168 network device - updated AROS 68K ROMs for playing games and demos - started updating italian catalogs, starting with Wanderer menus More info here: http://vmwaros.blogspot.it/2017/06/icaros-desktop-221-is-ready.html

Just done some more testing, here are the results:
Realtek 8138A = OK Realtek 8139C = OK Realtek 8168 = FORGET IT! Motherboards used for testing: Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3 = Good (except onboard RTL 8168) ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 = OK. Again onboard 8168, but may also freeze occasionally from unrelated cause (hence why I suspected the 8139 earlier). In conclusion, I now have the recipe for a stable AROS system again so all is well. Thanks again for your help and hopefully this info is useful. Certainly, it looks like we'd be better off without the 8168 driver at the moment as it's in an unhappy state.

Sorry, my mistake. It's definitely 8168. Initially I thought it was 8169 as that driver actually worked better, as in it would function for a while before eventually locking up. Also although I didn't try the elimination tests, my 8139 seems to have the same issues. I have a couple of revisions of this card so I'll do some more testing with them.

So is it 8168 or 8169? It's just that in your earlier post you mentioned 8169. I tired both 8168 and 8169 drivers with my new harware and whilst the 8168 did lock up the machine the 8169 worked fine. Cheers, Nigel.

Thanks kindly for the tips. Results follow:
## Test 1 ## Startup sound removed. Quote:

This gets to the boot ROM screen and the mouse pointer moves normally. Same result with Realtek 8168 NIC connected or not. I guess the NIC drivers are not loaded by this stage. ## Test 3 ## Removed about everything else in GRUB that didn't look to be critical. Removed all USB lines and more. Same result as above. Lock up on connecting Realtek 8168 NIC. ## Test 4 ## Removed SoundBlaster card and disabled onboard audio. Same result as above. Lock up on connecting Realtek 8168 NIC. Repeated some of the tests on two systems and just for laughs also bypassed the local switch and connected direct to the home DSL modem -> same results again. I think I may be taking up too much space here so I'll stick this in a bug report. BTW is there a native bug reporting tool for AROS, ie. something that scrapes all the system info uploads it to the bug tracker?

Options in GRUB menus to disable certain components for debugging:
Disable ATA: "ATA=off" ATA safe mode: "ATA=nodma,32bit" Disable AHCI/SATA: remove ahci.device line with Ctrl-K. Disable USB: remove pciusb.device and poseidon.library lines with Ctrl-K. Disable native graphics: "nomonitors" Disabling audio can't be done in GRUB, but disabling the startup sound in Icaros prefs should prevent it from starting (unless you plug USB device in or out, which may play a sound).

I just thought I'd mention installing 2.2 on my oldest x86 machine yesterday. It's an ancient Pentium, BIOS copyright dates it back to 1999 with 128MB ram and a best display of 800x600x16... and the new Icaros still works on it really well! Try doing that with Windows 10, or 7, or XP...
