That never ceases to amaze me... I multi-boot a number of different OSes on a 1.4GHz Opteron workstation, and yet there is only one OS I have seen that responds instantly to the user - AROS. I can be running it emulated in a system that is slow to respond, and even being slowly emulated it still responds instantly. I haven't seen an OS that responsive since... since the last time I was using my A1200.

@aldur
I wanted to get rid of Windows completely too....so I bought a Mac G5 ^_^ (Too bad there isn't a stand alone version of VirtualPC 7 yet without the extra M$ crud and Qemu is still pretty slow)

@JLF65
I have noticed VPC's bursts of speed as well...the mouse always seems to lag every second or so in every OS I have run under it (SkyOS, AROS, various Linux distros, Win98SE and XP) but this was on the G4...I didn't know if it happened on the PC version as well. Wish Qemu would have another release soon...

Still haven't gotten AROS to install yet and I am beginning to think I won't be able to either. Oh well...its still cool to show people how fast and light an OS can be off the CD and under a virtual environment compared to Windows! Blows some peoples minds.

Not everybody uses linux, or wants to (especially not just for the purpose of running a hosted os).

I do most of my testing in Virtual PC and VMWare (though vmware works better - virtual pc suffers "bursts of speed/slowness" kind of like the cpu speed pulses, and freezes when the floppy disk check occurs)

To install it on either took nothing special - add a harddisk - boot from the cd and install.

I use VMWare to run a few things myself. It's very handy. He said he was thinking of either installing Linux or W98 on his system, so I was just mentioning that Linux currently enjoys an advantage over Windows in developing for AROS.

This will change in time. Windows will get it's own hosted version, and gcc for AROS seems to be coming along, so you'll be able to do all your AROS programming in AROS.

If you wish to work on AROS, your best bet is to use the Linux hosted version. It doesn't need a seperate partition and everything is accessible to Linux at all times, even when AROS is running. For doing work specific to native AROS, I compile in Linux and write the data to CDRW. Inside native AROS, just copy off the CDRW using DOpus.

The first is the simplest way to do applications, and the second the simplest way to do native-specific drivers.

are you able to have a data drive avaialble to store code on?

what format does it have to be (theres no fat32 drivers yet)

can you edit a file in windows enviroment and compile on AROS this is what I really want to do, I'm only installing linux because I hate how slow my 1ghz laptop is with windowsxp but might drop down to win98. now that firefox is available I won't be using IE so linux or windows is ok, the only other think I want ot do is boot winUAE with os3.9 or UAE with OS 3.9

would ideally like to get rid of windows completly

I downloaded both one of the nightly builds and now I was finally able to get an image of ArosMAX. In VPC on the Mac you can tell a new PC in the list to mount an image file for a CD. Once you reboot the PC it launches AROS just fine. However, I have not ever been able to get AROS to install onto a hard disk, either on a real PC, under Qemu in Windows or Mac, or on VirtualPC. All can see the hard drive just fine (whatever size they may be) but I always get write errors when trying to format.

A friend of mine and I have AROS booting on a Mac G4 running VirtualPC 6. I wanna get 7 for my G5 but I don't think it is going to be worth it until 8 when it will have all the cut features... (more ram, native video, etc)
