Kind of returning to the original topic of this thread: Are there still any Amiga Word Processors being commercially developed?

A few of them have downloaded it. Most of the time when something interesting happens I pass a copy around. A couple of us got together and donated to Adam this summer. I tried to download the Aros Max myself a few times but have never been able to get it. When the next version comes out can we try to come up with another/additional way to get it. Maybe Aros Max can take the place of the "stable build" on the Aros.org site? I think it gives a better impression of Aros in general. I know a number of people that would use Aros if it were ready. Same old thing, too few devs, not enough funding to really hire some. Though I still think that when it gets a little farther along, better install, TCP/IP, sound, priting than more of the Amiga community might take interest. Well anyway. Go Aros!!

You can tell them they can:

1. Download the official ISO or AROS Max and they can see it for themselves.
2. If they really would like to see AROS and a given application become a reality, they can contribute to TeamAROS on any existing or create a new bounty for whatever float's their boat.

Interesting topic here. I still hold to what I and a few others have said. Aros is not really mature enough to even consider serious apps. That being said. I also belive that when it is mature enough, the sooner the better. At least one company, I hope, will take the chance and port a piece of softwre to AROS. If that does well, then a whole lot more will come. As it has been pointed out Amiga software should not be extreamly difficut to port. Not like porting Windows apps to Linux or something. I for one will go on record as saying "I will buy the first commericial Aros application avaliable." Well, as long as it isn't too, too expensive, under $100.00. I will buy a commercial verison of Aros as long as it provides a clear bennifits over a "free" version. I appricate that Blacktroll supports Aros, it is very cool that you can buy a PC with Aros pre-installed. I would buy one just to show support for Blacktroll and Aros, but I just don't have a use for Aros right now. But when I do.....


And just for my 2 cents. I think things like ImageFX and other such software would make Aros atractive. These programs are powerful, used by professionals and would provide Aros with an advantage over other Open Source Operating Systems. I work with a group of former Network TV News directors/producers that have fond memories of Amiga but no real interest in buying the A1. I am regularly asked "How is that Aros thing going?" I honestly think that there really is a market for Aros. It would certainly make a great low cost video editing system. It might not be huge of a market, but probably not all that small either. Now if only I was a brilliant devloper.

I got a couple of ideas for apps i would like to see. The first is an amiga os 4 emulator for aros i think the combo of using a ppc emulator(like pearpc) and the fact aros has my similar features(libs) could speed emulation on a 86x. Pearpc now gives a proformance of a 200mhz-250mhz.g3 on a athlon 2800. An pear pc port would be good too(mac os X). Another App I would see is a virtual pc type software image runing windows ,linux, or beos in a window with copy and paste.

As far as the software companies that are still in the Amiga arena, $1K in a block sale of ported (and probably fairly easy port at that since the APIs are pretty close) application like ImageFX (or Amiga Forever, or whatever) is probably tempting. Figure if the coder spends 10 or 20 hours of time doing the port, that is worth $1K. Plus the coder can hope for future sales as well. Having that type of money, up front, will get attention.

As far as the shirt, a portion of the profit goes towards TeamAROS, and speaking for TeamAROS, big thanks for your prior donations. Hopefully there will be more TeamAROS news in the first half of August.

I see your point about buying software to get a company to produce software for a platform (or ported to) but what good would it do to get a program ported to an imcomplete OS? AROS isn't in fully useable state yet. What I was implying I would like to see would be some of the few Amiga software houses left say something like "Okay, since we aren't sure how AmigaOS4/A1 combo is going to do or how well people are receiving the MorphOS/peg solutions, we are also going to support the AROS group with monitary donations and a promise to port present and future software once the OS becomes more feature rich."

If I were to buy a copy of ImageFX right now I would have no use for it. I have Amiga or MorphOS machine to run it on. And what do I say then? "Hey look! I bought your software and now I want a port for AROS please!" I don't know how well that would work, even if 10 people did it or more. Sure money talks, and I'll say loudly, but I don't think the money me and 10 others could muster would be sufficient. Besides, I would rather just donate that money to TeamAROS like I have in the past. (I think I have contributed around $85? Can't remember exactly....) My friends and family though are more weary about it though. (But they will play the lottery instead?!)

I'd like one of the AROS shirts though. Gonna have to wait until next weeks payday though.

IMO, if you can get ten or so other people together with money in hand, I bet you can get something like ImageFX ported to native AROS. The interest is there, it needs end users to bring commercial developers into the AROS communitiy. Money talks, loudly.

I can understand the PPC guys wanting a "more efficient" CPU to compliment an AmigaOS. But there is something to be said about being cost-effective when you are dealing with a group of users as small as the Amiga (or BeOS, QNX, RiscOS, etc...) groups are. The Linux users don't seem to have near the CPU envy that goes on in our community. They know Linux has been ported to pretty much everything so if they want to spend the money on a PPC system then that is their choice (or a super high end dual P4 EE 3.4 ghz...). There is no reason an AmigaOS system can't run on many different types of hardware just like Linux does. As I understand it there isn't really anything special about the AmigaONE or MorphOS solutions except that it is PPC powered that makes it radically different from a standard PC mobo is there? I would have already pre-ordered AmigaOS4 had it been developed for x86 rather than a locked down, expensive PPC solution. I also know at least 6 other close friends and family (all former Amiga users) who wish they could do the same thing too. Nobody I know wants to shell out the money for a MorphOS board or and A1 though. I am willing and plan to buy a new iMac G5 come September because I know Apple will likely be there for a long time. With everything the Amiga has gone through there is little hope in my mind for the "original" Amiga OS even with the KMOS happenings. Thus I choose to support AROS rather than the "commercial" Amiga / Amiga Clones. I wish more people could see it this way. If a company wants to make money with AROS all they need to do is support its development so that there is a viable platform in use. I'd bet users will buy more software when they can get the OS for free and aren't shelling out $1000 for a mobo first, afterall, it seems to be working for Linux in many ways.

i think a native ppc port of aros could be something in these field!
