Well since am one of those that made a booth in 2011 i feel involved in this. Would love to go Amiwest but this year my situation is kinda complex, having also my family visiting me from europe and the usual lack of funds.

For SCALE as open source operating system we have the right to have a booth and we can try to submit a talk; in 2011 i did almost all by myself, including brochures, live CDs, signage and providing the hardware: it costed me together with lodging around $300 and was not a small amount for my finances.

Considered this, we can lean on SCaLE to do an AROS meetup for all people around southwest US @ the booth: if possible try to set up our own agenda and submit it to the management; however i would really like to join forces, hardware and, most important, investments with other local users: SCaLE is not free to attend and, unless you are a booth attender, there will be a ticket either for booth, talk or both; I remember tried to summon other locals, to no avail, however i give my availability to build the first AROS SCaLE Gathering in 2013 if somebody else come up front and help me :)

[ot: a name for the gathering comes up: HerdingCats ] :P

I will send you a email and we can discuss "business ideas" in the next days. Kiosk was only one idea. There are certainly other opportunities (expecially in the B2B area).

Basically you are either cheaper or better (or at best both). Or you create something that noone other can offer (innovation). I will think about it.

Olaf... you can make an kiosk display... bur it won't be the revolution for Aros... how many displays would you create?

BTW kiosks systems are mostly browser based... so everyone gives a sh..t on what os is underlaying. Trust me I tried.

People say: "we give a s..t on a freak toy called hollywood, if we can make it with many pro tools in less time". Should we run an editor inside emulation?"

I love Hollywood! But i have got those responses.
.................
There is not one solution.... it must be a family of solutions...
Kiosks (well we would need to produce them by ourselves)
PC's
Notebooks,
MediaCenter
Gaming devices
...................
The longer we wait with promoting this things on big fairs... the more we get behind.
The next Pi will be faster and the slugginess of Linux will be overseen (the hardware compensates it)... so AROS will loose one pro point on those devices.

So get those chicks and promote AROS : D
We have enough "proof of concepts"
AMC
EMULA
Hosted as cheap solution

Olaf, if you are interested we could form a company creating info terminals / kiosk systems based on aros..

With solution I mean more than f.e. AresOne (computer running Aros natively with drivers). I mean a combi of hardware and software like a dedicated kiosk solution based on Hollywood (just a example).

Or a special usecase for Raspberry PI with a special combi of distribution and additional software.

The distributions (and more generally Aros) is the foundation on which business concepts can be generated. The distributions self are investments in the future (or just fun).

Solution means solving a customer "problem" or "need" (or to create a need). Not just hardware with OS (or distribution). And there exist also B2B (f.e. embedded market/industry) where there might be chances.

@OlafS3

Agree on the money, to my mind you need to supply Aros with Hardware to make money and that did not work at my last try.

Aros (and its distributions) will never earn money (Opensource) except people would pay for creating and updating (similar to Suse and others in Linux-World). Earning money would only be possible if we have software and solutions (combinations of software and hardware) that are based on it. The problem is to be really interesting for software-companies the installation numbers are still too small (a couple of thousands) compared to other markets in todays world. So in the short run we should use our resources to make it more known f.e. in the linux community and the 68k community. We need high numbers. Your Raspberry project is there interesting too to attract new users.

I am with Kalamatee on this.

I have done LOADS of shows in the old days and a few more recently and you would never do them unless they paid for themselves at least. Unfortunately we have nothing actually making much money from Aros yet to justify.

However, perhaps we could get the girls with the ears and tails anyway and just go for a drink and turn them into fans hopefully. Have hired models before though and trust me they stop half of our target audience from coming near the stand and the others are not then interested in the stand

Perhaps we could sponsor a stand at Scale 2012 or whatever it was called.
