Our clib implementation has proven to be able to provide us most of TeXlive (http://www.chilibi.org/aros/texlive/ ) or a port of XPDF (http://www.teamted.net/index.html#home ) and of course WebKit (http://sszymczy.rootnode.net/index.php?menu=projects&submenu=owb ) and many more, so I'm not sure if a port of ixemul.library would be really needed.

Everyone knew it was impossible. Along came a fool who did not know and he did it.

I can't find details of the license, but is it not possible to port AmiCygnix? I know the source is available but I don't know under what licence.

I guess Ed isn't interested in working on AROS himself (shame - he really does contribute so much!) but perhaps someone else could take on the job with his blessing and a little bit of help?

AFAIR, that was the classic "egg today/chicken tomorrow" dilemma, which is generally resolved like that: "guys, I can provide the egg today" "no, no and NO! the chicken tomorow is far better". Result: no chicken and no egg in months and years.

If I have to choose, I normally prefer the most polished and future-proof solutions (chicken tomorrow), but my AROS experience has told me that going for the egg today is always the best solution. At least it gives us something we can improve on, or actually USE, even if it creates issues of different nature.

Maybe ixemul is not the best way to handle Unix ports, however having it would probably help us getting other software from that world, the one that AmigaOS 4.1 already has got, for instance. If bernd would have ported it to AROS I would be happy, since it's ANOTHER instument at disposal: other coders may or may not use it, that's their choice, but at least the would have that choice available.

regards

Well, sources of ixemul.library for AmigaOS 3.x are here:
http://amiga.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/amiga/ixemul

and (surprise! surprise!) author of port is Bernd Roesch, better known as the author of AfA. So, maybe, he would also be helpful to anyone interested in porting it to AROS.

AFAIR, in fact, Bernd prefers to develop on AmigaOS 3 starting from AROS sources, than doing the opposite.

There are (where ?) existing port of Apach? + PHP for AOS3 using ixemeul.library. If there is something like ixemul.libray or libnix on AROS it should be possible.

If not ... hmm what about a Bounty for ixemul or libnis port ?

I was so excited about the chance of getting it I only read the bit about who was doing it. Shame.

It only relies on AmiCygnix to the extent that it
provides a Posix environment. At least I understand
this from what I've read in the various announcements.

ciao
