Well, as discussed elsewhere, Wanderer is in bad need of a facelift. At the same time, a little more support for these other things should be incorporated. No, I don't mean trying to add SVG right now, but rather making sure that adding it LATER is easy to do.

I've looked around for various WB replacement code projects. JazzBench was open, but I couldn't find the code because it was so old. The others I found (ScalOS and MBench) are both closed projects.

I would agree with the idea of that this should be as open as possible. I know of 2 operating systems and one upcoming one that is using SVG graphics for their interface and even one that will be using mpeg movies for their icons.

Implementing SVG support in the interface would be a good improvement to wanderer, especially for designing UI elements in addition to Zune or even as a zune extension..

Most of the world doesn't work on just rich bitmaps anymore..

Sounds good to me. It's amazing what Amiga programmers were able to do with the original datatypes: we have MP3 audio and MPEG video datatypes.

A cleanup and some extensions given the advancement of streaming technology seems reasonable. This would be a good place to hash things out.

Animated icons are the way things are moving. Look at the icons for save games in game machines like the PS2 - animated. Making the OS use datatypes on icons is simple and allows for the future. ANY static picture could be used for an icon, not just IFF or PNG as is supported now. You want SVG icons? Just make an SVG datatype. Don't want animation in your icons? Go to the Preferences and turn it off... or turn it on if you like animation (no animation should probably be the default).

The whole point is not to limit yourself by making a bloated icon handler that only understands certain hardcoded types... just use the datatypes. That is what they were for - allowing any application to use any supported format. It was decades ahead of it's time. We should think ahead just as the original Amiga programmers did. One day, we'll all be using 10 GHz 64 bit CPUs with real-time photo-realistic graphics cards. AROS would already be ready for it.

I am a big supporter of modularity. I'm only a bit afraid of abuse of such features. But as long as it's configurable, maybe it can't hurt.

And Datatypes are a great thing. Unfortunately, in it's current state it's quite crippled. A couple of years ago I tried to restart the DTA project, but it had no success.

So, first on the list should probably an updated (read: new) datatypes system, one that supports streaming of data and includes other enhancements.

I should have some small text files filled with some ideas that were discussed on the mailing list at that time... aha, got one :)

Some extra features:
* filters : available to all datatype-capable data for manipulating the data - per data category (text, image, ...)

* renderers : display the data - especially interesting for hypertext data and 3D data
perhaps a viewer and an editor class

both of these should have some kind of GUI, that can be displayed by the calling application, either in a window, or in a frame.

Ciao
