A single user system doesn't need all the security overhead and user complexity as found in Linux, though such complexity does help to sell (as in support for a price) linux.

As hardware improves, such as system now having usb drive bootability..... take your system with you on a usb drive... and the option to run native or perhaps firewall hosted on windows or Un*x flavors...

There most certainly is a place for small OSs such as AROS.

Of course there is the issue of being FOSS or not that has relativity in teh survival of such OSs at this time.

AROS has a future and improvements can be made not only in applications available but in how well AROS plays with other OSs.

The Amiga 1000 was shipping by July 1985. It was out well before Windows 1.0. MS didn't catch up until Windows 95, ten years later.

Sorry, can someone remove the quote part on my last post? (to make it shorter). Clicking "cancel post" seems to do nothing

It's odd though how things in a way have come 180 degrees for software. Just think - for a moment - back to 1986, the year the amiga 1000 launched.

If you'd been asked "Which OS might still be about in 2000?" (say) during the late 80s the money would have been on the amiga.

And why? 1986 -- The PC had either GEM or Windows 1 running on expensive hardware with no multitasking or really any games. The mac was largely black and white and even more pricy than the PC. Some alternatives existed such as minix but *nix-based systems were relegated to expensive hardware - not the sort of thing you'd have in your home. GNU software was still being written at this point, and linux (as in the kernel) didn't exist at all (maybe just a glint in linus' eye? ).

If you'd asked me then, I'd said "amiga". What more could you want -- moving a few years onto 1987/88, you could have a 512K system with a proper colour multitasking OS which used a WIMP system all for UKP (?) 399. Compare that to the PC and Mac. Amiga was selling so well in those years; several magazines (one of which ran to well over 100 pages), lots of hardware, software, add-ons. And a GUI and command line in approx 1MB too. Not bad going -- how on earth could it fail? The future seemed very rosy indeed for the amiga back then.

Unfortunatly, it did all go wrong

While it's hard to say where this all will be in 2 years' time, I'm gonna have a stab at it :) .

Amithlon, which is already dead is out of the running and will be just a forgotten reminant of what could have been. A pity, since amithlon could have allowed those with classic amigas and who ran apps to come across to a cheap PC platform before buying (say) the amigaone. Unfortunatly a spanner was thrown in the works -- amithlon, or rather Amigaos xl's legal status was shown to be illegal :( which messed the whole show up. A shame since amithlon actually *does* feel a bit like an amiga, even if it's on x86 and is really only an emulator.

The pegasaos (no, I can't remember how to spell it :) ) and amigaone I think will be counting themselves very lucky if they are still about. Currently they are plauged by high prices and too few sales. The pegasuos website looks professional enough, but the price is too high just for a motherboard. The amigaone website almost seems to be a confused mess, with yet another pricy motherboard. I can understand up to a point why they are charging so much since they aren't banging out thousands of PC motherboards like some chinese motherboard manufacturer can; instead I'm guessing they are limited to short runs. Even so, the price is too high for either system.

Unfortunatly I think it is too late for the "new" amiga systems. With all the will in the world they are never going to compete with cheap PC systems, and the closest rival - the mac - though it is also overpriced overall offers more (though I don't mean it's better). Really all this should have been happening 10 years ago -- if the pegasos or amigaone even at a lower clock speed had appeared in 1995 not 2005 the whole computing scene might have been different. Prehaps somewhere in some parallel universe there's someone writing about the "new" x86 architecture and how it's overpriced, it was 'cursed' for 10 years and is more than likely going to vanish......

Sad to say though - at least for hardware - maybe it's time to forget the amiga completely? There's only so many times you can flog a dead horse, but really I think - for amigaone/pegasos - it's not so much of a case of their day has been done, it's more of a case of they never had a day in the first place. About the only way they could turn things around would be to go to town on advertising and bring the price down a *lot*. Then they might just be in with a chance of surviving.

That then leaves something which is similar (but not related) to all of this (slightly OT I guess), and that's the commodore one. It's already come further more quickly than amigaone but really it is only meant for hobbyists (I guess). Having said that, there is something intresting along these lines -- you can now buy a C64 with 30 built in games - brand new, no not from ebay - all contained in a "classic" style joystick. (http://www.dtvhacking.info/ ) . Avalible for very little money, and has the plus of being hackable - you can take it apart, solder on a couple of connectors and have almost a complete C64!

That's regarding the hardware. The software is a different kettle of fish. Certianly a plain vanilla implemtation of (say) WB3.0 with nothing added wouldn't be that useful, but the whole way of working and implenting amigaos for another platform isn't dead at all. Witness (cue drum roll) AROS!

AROS seems to have a fair amount of activity which is good, and so far aros is smaller than either a linux or windows installation. I've tried using AROS (Max/Min) myself too, and it seems to work quite well :) . Though weather aros will slow down and fade away to nothing or weather it'll pick up speed and grow only time can tell I guess.

I really hope that AROS can grow to be the primary choice of the Amiga community... the fact it runs natively on x86 is something I really like. And if someone would do the UAE integration or any other effort to make AROS binary compatible with classic Amiga's, then I'd feel like I'm in heaven :)

That's the great thing about AROS, if there is a will (and talent;), AROS can be ported to just about any hardware. Hopefully someone will drag AROS ARM out of unmaintained and breath life back into that port.

AROS: In 2 years I will have my Aros-wearable based on a nano-itx motherboard. It will probably be enough for everyday stuff.

MorphOS: How knows what hardware it runs on in 2007? Maybe Powerbooks? There is probably new faster CPU-cards for the PegII at least.

AmigaOne:If they don?t have the JIT by then... I see no change

I don?t care about PPC vs x86 except the fact that with x86 I can pick up laptops, tablets and embedded motherboards like nano-itx and pc/104 off the self for a reasonable price.

If version 1.5 of MOS ever gets released fully I would be (pleasantly) surprised. The motherboard bottlenecks on the current Peg2 would mean the power of 1.4GHz would be hard to see in action, are they going to fit a more desktop oriented chipset? Price wise, remember to factor in the cost of a complete system and hardware availability problems and suddenly they don't look so good next to the Macs either. I hope they can make it work, but expect they won't.

It's the Sam Coupe all over again I tells ya!

Anyway, the A1 will probably mature into what the classic Amiga was 5 years back (ie. still getting hardware/software support, and dedicated users, but no revolution just yet).

As for AROS? Well, after the 3rd world war in which the Microsoft World Government get overthrown AROS will take over the world's electronic devices, powering everything from digital watches to spacecraft, heralding a new world order of peace and love.

Or maybe it'll be a useable home OS.

Either way I'll be happy

Wow, I didn't see that ending coming ...

The problem is that the Peg mobo sucks. It's a slow G3 or G4 stuck on a five year-old PC mobo. Pricing it 10% less than a brand-new Mac which is years ahead of it technologically speaking doesn't hack it.

The Pegasos 2 is certainly not up to date when compared to the recent Macs however it is the fastest way to run PPC apps at a decent price (compared to alternatives).

Quote:

PPC people are waiting for AROS on Mac - which is proceeding well from the messages that occasionally appear on the mailing list and the forum here.

Exactly, if AROS would run on a MAC, offer similar OS features as MorphOS/OS4 AND run Morphos and possibly OS4 apps (while waiting to get some native AROS apps) I would definitely become an Aros user.

If it doesn't hapen I may get a Peg2 whenever the 1.42 Ghz G4 and a newer MorphOS release are out.
