Nice! Did you already try if audio and network are supported?

Cool. Despite my reluctance to use the word, its quite "cute". Nice looking little machine. How have you found it so far ?

My new A1600 has arrived, and Icaros booted up on it from a USB CDROM drive first try!

Now I just have to work out how to partition the drive and install Icaros and Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

Maybe it is a newer model ?

This pretty confuses me. Maybe there are more models than the ones I knew. Anyway, it's quite unusual to find a 8" 1024x768 netbook. Before buying, give them a call, and ask to check the correct size of the screen.

I used the 10" verison (the ecafe 900) with Linux and a Hercules DJ Console bundled together. The keyboard is crappy, but the rest of the netbook is not too bad. The 8" version has the weird 800x480 resolution, which is pretty unusable today.

I just stumbled about this one.

It is not really powerful, but the price is very interesting.
The price is including german VAT (19%) without it costs just 138,65 ?

Does anyone have any experience with this netbook ?

Don't worry, Cammy, I was just answering to some "alternative-to-x86" platforms fans that regularily appear when talking about possible AROS hardware. I clearly understood your point of view and I agree with you, though I think that the platform which better fits your goals would be the Atom one. Not the "alternative" PPC/ARM proposals from Genesi or whoever else. And that's for a pure question of market reality, not because they are bad or I have wrong attitudes with them.

I think I have confused a few people here. :(

First of all, I do not plan on buying a single netbook and then selling it to try and make a profit! I'm not an idiot, this is for my own personal use and for testing AROS on. If we can some day manage to get the full platform supported (sound/GFX/network...) then at least we can tell people they now have a target netbook PC to aim for. So many Atom based netbooks use similar or the same components inside, and these cheap generic ones are no different. If we could afford to buy a bulk lot of them, preinstall AROS and Linux, we don't only have to sell them JUST to the Amiga market. At the prices we can get them we could sell them cheap on eBay to anyone wanting a cheap netbook, even if they only boot up into Linux at first until they get curious and try AROS. Trojan Horse an Amiga OS into someone's life.

Another thing that I'm not sure but may have confused some people, the first netbook I suggested used the VIA CPU and chipset. These are 100% Intel x86 compatible CPUs, just like AMD. They aren't some foreign architecture like ARM or PPC. It was only a suggestion to the people who were not fond of Intel, but didn't want something incompatible like ARM/PPC/MIPS.

The VIA C7 wasn't a very spectacular CPU anyway, and the models I found (and eventually purchased one of) with the Intel Atoms ended up being a little cheaper. But when VIA Nano netbooks become affordable, they are certainly going to give the Atom a run for its money.

Yeah, that'll teach them to support AROS in bad economic times.

Genesi has a product and a competent person who's porting AROS to the(ir) ARM architecture, but this won't change the fact that the most popular platform supported by AROS is x86. There's also AROS for PPC, but just look at the PPC AROS software range and imagine how much time it will be required for the ARM port to become *usable* (where usable means with emulators, text editors, ide, browser, trackers and everything you can find for x86 AROS). I just notice here some sort of anti-intel prejudice when talking about ARM, and I can bet only 10% (or less) of the people who today says "I will buy an ARM machine to use AROS on for sure, when it's ready", will actually buy one.

If you'd ask me what's the netbook platform AROS should choose - thanks Genesi for the kind support, but - I can only answer "Intel", Atom today and Moorestown tomorrow. It's the only one which can use the few programs AROS has got in the meanwhile and it's the only one which is already half-supported. I have just got enough of alternative CPU architectures, just to be happy to feel different. For ME it's time to be pragmatic: we don't have the manpower to write drivers for the most popular netbook architecture, and we should go for a niche one? Not for me.
