Yeah, I might just buy a micro-ATX board with a similar chipset as the Asus board recommended above and risk it.
Graphics would be one major reason to go native. I have an old GTX 460 that might work. If not, finding an older GT2xx or GF9/8 card isn't very difficult at all.

If you have mini pci-express slot it should be good for a network card. Sound most of the time works out of the box but sure should be tested. What you for sure need is a pci-express slot for some older nvidia gfx- card. Running native gfx is half the fun of running native. With VESA I would rather run hosted to save all the trouble.

Thanks for the tip regarding the M5A97 R2.0.
I'm trying to decide whether to build a dedicated Icaros box or just keep using Virtualbox. VM's are convenient, but there's something special about running natively on hardware. A micro-ATX board would have been ideal due to the smaller size and lower cost, but with only one PCI port at best, it's a bit of a gamble.

If you could consider to go the AMD way
I would recomend Asus M5A97 R2.0 I just uppgraded to this from an older AMD board. Audio, USB, Ethernet (wire) works out of the box. the MB has no graphic card so I use Nvidia gs 8400 512 ddr3 I also have a "china" micro PCI to PCI adapter and a micro PCI network card (Atheros5000. device). Good network speed on LAN and internet works fine with OWB.(I am logged in with this setup, Writing this) The MoBo card is in the Stores still and is an modern AM3+ card with 930 chipset and HDaudio. Can hold a lot of memmory but 4 GB is enough, since the 32bit version of Aros (or windows) can not use more than 4 Gb. I also use a cheap kingmax ssd drive (32Gig) and it runs silent and quick. Another good MB is the Asus M4A78LT-M Sound,USB and network works fine. If I am not remembering wrong it also had a grafic that worked. It is possible to test most functions from CD without installing Aros to your system. Test USB, Sound, Ethernet, Wireless and graphics from the CD if it works Install Aros.. If ex Wireless or ethernet dont work.. buy a cheap supported card and put it into your box..

As my "new" AROS-Box isn?t that modern (i5 from 2012) I can only give you some general hints for building.
Important thinks for a motherboard (regarding AROS) are: At least two free PCI-slots for a network card and a soundcard (so you are on the safe side when no onboard-sound or -network is supported) - My motherboard for example has only one PCI-slot, to my luck the onboard-sound i fully supported by AROS drivers. So I needed only one PCI-slot for network. Be sure that you can switch the SATA-controler to "IDE-modus" in BIOS (this did the trick for me regarding SATA - I can use onboard-SATA without switching off DMA and stuff). Beside this most modern motherboards should work, but it?s always a little try and error. If you are able to boot the IcarosLive-CD in one of the VESA-modes and AROS is usable (check USB!), than you have the right motherboard f?r AROS. Of course it?s not really possible to test motherboards with the LIveCD before buying, but when you order online, you can give the motherboard back within 14 days.

Hello !
Someone could tell me which actuals mobo from Asus, Asrock or Gigabyte are available to built an aros box with the new icaros ? Preferably with intel chipset and processors even if i have to buy wifi network card with atheros chipset or nvidia video card. I often saw on post messages, hardware configuration used by users of aros, but unfortunatly too old hardware sometines isn't available on manufacturers's page nowadays, for example on msi, this mobo MSI H55M-E33 MSI H55M-E33 (Intel H55 Express) - Micro ATX. Thanks
