I read all the thread. It was a pity to haven't see it before. Anyway, it was an interesting experience because the tool is very good in general. But actually he cannot write that AROS is supported, because... it doesn't work.

I'll be happy to review this software also Wintrick where long ago I suggested to the author of Rufus enter AROS in his sosftware. I do not know if you've read all the posts attached above, the author of Rufus was an Amiga had an A500, also on the post I quoted David Costa "excellent Italian software developer SARDU Multi Boot, he had proposed but not knowing the Amiga was frightened of several directory of the system.

Non so se hai letto tutto il post allegato sopra, l'autore di Rufus ? stato un Amighista, aveva un A500, sempre sul post ho citato Davide Costa, lo sviluppatore Italiano dell'ottimo software SARDU Multi Boot, anche lui si era proposto ma non conoscendo i sistemi Amiga si spavent? delle numerose directory del sistema.

A quick update. Today I received a private alpha from the next version of Rufus, and the issue is solved: I was able to create a bootable USB Pen, but only for AROS x64.

Unfortunately it isn't able to create a legacy/BIOS version of Icaros (which is 32-bit only) and also AROS i386, because it requires an "isolinux" ISO. It's able to create an UEFI USB image of both, but they don't work because my laptop's firmware is only able to boot UEFI in 64-bit mode.

I tried an AROS x64 (which is UEFI), and I was able to boot. It surpassed the infamous "Waiting for bootable media" screen, and I was able to quickly see the "Workbench screen", albeit almost immediately I saw some corrupted graphic and then the PC reseted itself. I tried editing the Startup-Sequence, removing stuff from time to time, but even with only the two Assign + Wanderer commands nothing changed; ditto for an empty Startup-sequence. I also put a "Copy S:PCD S:ZZZ" command at the first line to see if at least something is executed, but it seems to don't work. I also tried to disable SATA from GRUB; no change at all.

So currently I gave-up, because I've no other ideas on how to proceed.

EDIT. After creating the AROS x64 USB Pen with Rufus and booting, it didn't work, because GRUB complained about not founding the /EFI/BOOT/grub/x86_64-eif/normal.mod file. It was right, because the AROS64 ISO has an /EFI/BOOT/grub/i386-eif/ folder instead. So I just renamed it like what GRUB required, and finally it booted. ;)

I've searched for some free ISO editor tool, but I found none unfortunately. So I dropped this idea, and I decided to wait for any new about Rufus to check it again in future.

In the afternoon I started the usual Icaros installation procedure, and it succeeded, but it was a pain: it took something like 3-4 hours, with some problems popping up with the SFS filesystem (but clicking Retry on the dialog allowed me to complete the installation).

When I've some free time I'll try some nightly as well. Now I've consumed all the available slots for the week-end and I'm going to sleep, but in the end it was good experience.

Although perhaps ethical issues arise, there should be no problem 'burning' icaros into a new .iso.

Every cd burner software should do. It only requires you to remove the datatypes and cinnamon.

you could always use a nightly for testing purposes. There isn't really much of a difference concerning boot-procedure. Icaros adds some grub options and of course the startup-sequence differs (as well as additional software).

The Rufus author will fix the problem with the characters used by Cinnamon Writer. It's an issue of Rufus, so it'll be addressed in one of the future releases.

So the only real bug of the Icaros ISO, is related to the duplicate Datatypes.info file, which is presumably generated by some tool running on Linux (which usually has case-sensitive filenames).

Update: manually patching the ISO I was able to remove the warning for the duplicated "DataTypes.info", but unfortunately it didn't work for the Cinnamon Writer dictionaries. I tried both the full Icaros ISO and the Light one: no way to go.

The partially created USB doesn't boot, for course. From the BIOS boot selector I can see the USB UEFI entry, but once I select it I can see a screen which very quickly disappears (so, I wasn't able to see it), and then Windows 8 starts to boot.

I've filed a bug report to the Rufus developer asking him to put an option to let the USB image creation continue, even if some error is found. So I've to wait for an answer or, hopefully, a new release with this little fix.

Question: is there any possibility to creare a new Icaros ISO which fixes the above problems? Even removing entirely Cinnamon Writer, which is THE problem actually. A light version is enough, just to continue experimenting with Rufus.
