Watch my first post. Citing myself:
"Roadster is a TCP/IP stack with GUI, so Roadster is to Roadshow what Genesis is to AmiTCP."
OS4 uses Roadshow but not Roadster. Roadster comes with a GUI, wizards and halfway-easy settings.

I know that this would work against the current bounty. But to be as objective and informative as I can be I wanted to tell you that there is the possibility to get this TCP/IP stack ported. We do not have to want it. AROS' big advantage is that without any financial background it cannot be controlled or disturbed by any commercial interests.

hmm.. i only based what i said on the assumption it was open-source, if it's not open source, i don't really see how much of a market there will be for it... especially with open-source alternatives being developed in parallel.

on the other hand, it would be cool to have someone developing commercial software for Aros even if initially a tcp/ip stack was all that was being developed, it's something.

if you have commercial developers developing stuff too, it generates more "value" to the open source software, and if the software is a well written stack with all the latest ddos protection, firewall, trojan, stateless packet inspection, and a nice gui, with a low use of system resources, then i'm well interested in it...

if of course a working but cut-down version was offered soon at a reduced rate (or as beta-test freeware) then it may get a userbase, and as we've all seen before, sometimes success is determined by a satisfied promoting userbase...

of course if the price included a nice web browser with support for HTML 4 it would be even better too :D

I agree, I still want OOS for the primary AROS components. I am not against Roadster as long as work continues on the OOS side and Roadster offers some bennifit over the OOS solution. Basicly I would like to have the option.

One thing I don't think we (the AROS community) should do is to discourage the development of Roadster if indeed it is happening or being considered. Personally I would still buy it to support devlopment on this platform. But, I cannot stress enough, There should be OOS options for primay AROS components with (hopefully) commercial products that would provide things not in the OOS version. Like if Roadster came with driver support not found in the OOS version.

now climbing down off my soapbox.

I'm against it. Key elements of AROS MUST be open source. Having proprietary commercial apps is one thing, but something as key as TCP/IP? What next? Closed source commercial hardrive drivers?

These things will make it into AROS as open source eventually (some sooner than others). If you had the choice between open and closed, that would be one thing. I fear that a commercial stack now would probably kill work on the open source one.

OK Questions:

I thought that OS4 came with a TCP/IP stack already. If this isn't avaliable till the end of the year, what is OS4 using now?

How does this differ from what OS4 currently has? (that is, if I am correct and OS 4 already has TCP/IP)

My interest really depends on cost (US dollars, not sure how the above post translates).

What does this do to the TCP/IP bounty being worked on currently? Does it offer bennifits that would not be found in an Open Source solution for AROS?

Just for the record. I am interested. If I can afford it. If for no other reason than to show that money can be made by devloping AROS products.

Dave

I talked to Harald and Thorsten at the meeting. Roadster will at first be available for OS4. A 68k port shall follow. Native x86 ports for Amithlon and AROS are optional and depend on our interest. The product isn't available yet but shall be until the end of the year. The price should be around 60-65¤ but is not definitely fixed yet.
So I suggest to make a tally sheet and see if enough people (whatever "enough" will be in numbers) want it.

There is no website for it yet. Roadster is a product by VMC and based upon Olaf Barthel's TCP/IP stack Roadshow (which is part of AmigaOS4).

and the other kitty was playing Grand theft auto on PS/2 so wasn't listening.

TCP/IP with GUI would be great. TCP/IP with GUI, firewall, and DDOS hardened stack would be greater.

:)
any idea on the status of roadster?Quote:
